Off to Hong Kong, now....what do I "need"? (+General Info)

Was this taken with your 40D?
If so, what focal length was this shot at?

Thanks

Hi, I'm the one you want :D

Was shot with with a 350D and 24-105mm. The focal length was 40mm, but I was shooting in portrait - the picture is part of a larger 11 photo panorama, above has been cropped down to about 5 images.
If you were to shoot it as one image, it would probably require being at 24mm.

I'd love to see a bigger version of that shot :)

Just goes to show Rod, you don't need the latest and greatest to create amazing shots.......Just some decent L glass :lol::lol:

Haha yes, I like to think I take the "spend more on the lens than the body" advice to the extreme.:)

Here's a bigger version (not too sure if it will show up - is hosted on a photo site I no longer use nor pay for).

You can spot the Langham Hotel on the far right, is the red dot above 1cm from the AIA buidling.

Rod, That is one of the best pans I've seen, thanks for sharing it.

Cheers. Sorry for digging up the thread from a few pages back, but this was brought to my attention by my girlfriend today. It's a new observation deck openning on the 100th floor of the city's tallest building, there is still 20 floors of hotel above it . It will open on the 17th of April, so might be of interest. In the meantime, there's a good virtual tour.

Hi Guys,

As the title says I'm lucky enough to be jetting off to Hong Kong in May and keep asking myself the question....what will I need?

Heres a simple list of what I have at the moment and will no doubt be taking:

Canon 40D (x2 Batteries)
Sigma 17-70 F2.8-4.5 (non OS)
Lowepro Fastpack 350 (so plenty of room)

Macbook Pro (for backups)

Now, I know I'm going to need a tripod for the night/Landscape shots and was thinking manfrotto 190X PROB & ball head?

I'm not keen on lumping the fastpack around so I'm after a smaller bag for day to day was thinking something like the billingham Hadley Pro?

Now for the glass.......

Although I am on a bit of a budget I see no point in flying half way around the world without the right kit to make the best of whats in front of me so I have been looking into maybe hiring a lens or two?

see:
http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=265366&highlight=hire

I've been leaning towards the canon 24-105 F/4L IS, looks like a great walkabout lens & the IS (3 stops) could come in very handy in low light, not forgetting the macro. The only drawback would be the equivalent 38mm on the 40D leaving my trusty sigma for the landscapes of the harbour/front/peak?

Thats my current plan, however I must say I am relatively new to photography so any advice would be gratefully received.........

EDIT:

Anyone with general info/advice for traveling/things to do in HK is very welcome. Seems there are rather a lot of members either been or are planning to go so happy for this to serve as a general thread for anyone with an interest in HK.

Chris

It may have changed since I was in Hong Kong but I wouldn`t buy anything new here, I would buy stuff in Hong Kong it was much cheaper than here,no vat for a start.

Rod, I can't see the image because it's been blocked for hotlinking. Can you please provide a link to the image instead?

That looks fantastic Rod, will defiantly give this a visit. the views look amazing.

Chris

Stunning pics Rod.F

Will have to get myself some nice pics when I visit HK this or next year (now I have a DSLR :D)

Rod, Thats one of the best I've seen great shot and location I'll be sure to try and make it there if the wether is good :notworthy:

I agree with Ed, would look great on canvas.

Chris

 This one is the greatest view of HongKong I have ever seen, could you provide the full exif details?

Thanks. Hong Kong is probably the most photogenic city in the world when the skies clear up, it's no wonder the locals are mad about photography.

As for the exif:
Canon 350D + 24-105mm L
shot in manual and RAW
f/11 10 seconds iso100 @40mm
(11 photos in portrait orientation)
about 10 minutes after sunset, facing where the sun was.

thanks for the exif. BTW, Shanghai also looks that beautiful as HongKong do.

Thanks for all the info and pics guys.....135 Posts, more than I could have imagined.

Update on the purchase front, just got myself the goittos classic tripod 1060 and for £30 I am very impressed. just need a ball head to sit on top now :D

One other quick question, I was thinking about getting a watch whilst I was over in HK. Not one of those cheap Chinese "copies" but a real one.

Anyone know what the general difference in price is between here and HK. To be a bit more specific I was thinking Omega Speedmaster pro?

Chris

I came back from HK a few days ago, to be honest I was really supprised how expensive it was, my advice would be avoid buying a watch there and avoid buying a watch from Nathan Rd off people who try to lead you up into apartment blocks to buy really crap copies.

Thanks for the heads up!

Any chance Chris that you'll actually go to HK and take some pics?

If you want to get a feel of the place I would go with a very wide lens for the markets (Stanley market on HK and the night market in Kowloon) and a strobe. A medium zoom for the junks in the harbour.

To be fair you can get some pretty good fake gear if you shop around....and you will get ripped off if you shop anywhere on Nathan Road.

You won't find genuine luxury/designer goods cheaper here....people don't want cheap....they just want to come over from the mainland by the busload and load up on western brands, the more excessive the better!

Well I'm back and we had an amazing time, thank you to all who contributed.

I haven't had time to process my snaps yet (all 900 of them) but heres one I quickly stitched together.

Looks like you got caught out by the height of the IFC building! Look forward to seeing any other photos

Taken last week, handheld:

They were handheld?! I tried to take a few night shots, but failed miserably. Were you propped up against anything at all?

Next time I'm definitely gonna bring a monopod with me. I don't think I'd be comfortable setting up a tripod in the extremely busy streets of HK. But a monopod, especially with my small E-P1, should be better than nothing.

Hi Rod,

Yes kinda messed up with this one, although it was hand held and with the other half chewing my ear off!! :D

Really looking forward to my visit, only a few weeks to go now, although watching the China episode of 'An Idiot Abroad' has put my wife well off going (she was sceptical even before she watched it).
