Off to Hong Kong, now....what do I "need"? (+General Info)

On the topic of food, I always use this website. The locals are crazy about food, the website is a collective effort to review all that you can eat and drink here. It has real reviews of every single food place in hong kong, from corner stalls to 5 star banquets. Even my nearest KFC has a dozen reviews and 20+ pictures

And while I'm here, anyone got good cheap hotel recommendations, preferably near Kowloon? We're looking for something around £50/night mark for 3 adults, but it's not easy to find :(

Don't know about your idea of good, but about £50 a night can get you a room at the YWCA in Kowloon.

General rules to eating in HK: If it's busy, it's good. If it's quiet, it's probably not. If it's full of Westerners, it's overpriced. If it's full of locals, it's probably cheap! I'm quite partial to the Korean places by me that get you a full meal for about a fiver.

Thanks Chris, I like your mantra.

Looks like I've swapped Hotels to the Langham Place and the good news is we've got an extra night for slightly less money than I was paying at the Harbour Grand Hong Kong, won't be confirmed until the morning though.

Good to hear Ed, I don't think I've heard a bad word said against the Langham Place from here or people I know in HK.

For more info on all of the main parks in Hong Kong, check here. Just make sure you visit Victoria Park on a Sunday around lunch time ;)

There was a recent episode of Working Lives on iPlayer which some might find interesting. I've also just stumbled across Greatest Cities of the World with Griff Rhys Jones, but haven't watched it yet.

I'll check those out tonight when I get in from work Will, Cheers.

Thanks for that Chris, great shot could I ask is this the same area as the dragons back walk?

Bit of a disaster trying to book this.

Well we are still going, only now it's 8 days earlier (don't ask) and back to the Harbour Grand Hong Kong, but we are now in Hong Kong for 8 full nights.

Nope, that shot is taken from a peak on the range between Kowloon and the New Territories, looking South, so that is Hong Kong Island you can see in the distance (pretty much all of it).

The Dragon's Back is over on the East end of the island. There are endless trails and hikes around HK.

Sorry to hear you've had some problems Ed, at least you've come out of it with 8 full days in HK.

This thread is so interesting. I wish we could have a section of the forum that was just for threads on cities or other places of interest. Like one thread for HK, another for ??? etc and they are stickied and added to as people post new info.

I'll have to stop reading this now because it's seriously making me want to go back to HK for a fourth time!

Haha, Cheers Andy started as an equipment thread but has turned out to be much much more. It really has been invaluable for me.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed!!!

Some of the best threads lead in different directions than originally planned but still prove useful to all.

A wealth of info here. So far I've resisted posting any HK pics here but I'm starting to think about my visit this year and this just gets the juices flowing:

I'm there in April and was thinking of taking my griped d300s, sigma 10-20, nikon 18-200 and maybe my nikon 10.5mm fisheye, also going to Melbourne, Cairnes and Tokyo, so thought this kinda covered a sensible range, I also managed to get hold off a mendoza seahawk suitcase so will let you know how well it looks after my gear.

Hi Paul, sounds like you've got yourself a trip and a half there, really good!!

just googled the mendoza seahawk, it looks as if it should be strapped to the side of a tank :D

I was toying with the idea of the 10-20 Sigma......so much choice and options.

Chris

Update on purchases, picked up the Billingham hadley large yesterday. Not had a chance to take it out as yet but I must say that after loading it up it looks and feels like an amazing quality piece of kit, by far the best quality bag I've had.

There is another brand new seahawk on ebay at the moment, they are well built!

I think the sigma 10-20 is a must for any bag imo :P

Yet another purchase update, had delivered today a shutter release timer.

Been looking into the time lapse stuff and must say I really like it particularly the night stuff. Will look forward to having a play with it over the next few days.:banana::banana:

Does anyone know the current price of the Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 pancake in HK? I've tried several websites, but I can only find it on one site, and that's only included as the kit lens, not by itself.

Have been in HK for a few days now, went to a couple of the stores in Ap Liu Street, its like a HK ebay store but you're really there! Definitely go check them out, you'll be picking stuff up that you never knew you needed :D

Gone rather quiet.........

Cheers for that terry, hope you've had a great time!

Oh, forgot to mention, take an ND/CPL filter (which I didn't), its not really that sunny but is very bright, I don't think I got a single pic with the sky exposed properly :shake: The skies aren't very clear this time of year and its quite misty. The weather's a bit funny as well (I usually go in the summer), I was in shorts one day and jeans with a jacket the next!

Ap Liu street is great for "Ebay" products, but there aren't that many bargains in the other shops mentioned in this thread. A Transcend 8gb class 6 sd card was about £16, a Nikon D7000 body was £1,000.

What other advice do you require? Happy to help, if I can.

Hi Will,

Just after as much advice/info as I can get really not necessarily regarding tech. General where to go what to do and see, where to eat/shop/drink

Some great shots there Terry love No.1, some great colours in them all (apart from the B&W of course ) I'll be sure to pick up some filters before my trip.

This thread could go on forever!

Have you got yourself any guide books yet?

When you get to Hong Kong, I'd suggest taking a visit to a Page One branch. It's primarily a book shop, but I also found they stocked a wide range of lomo cameras too. Got myself a few Hong Kong centric photography books from the branch in Festival Walk (just outside Kowloon Tong MTR station).

For places to go and things to see, have you checked out Trip Advisor?

For convenience, I love the likes of Maxim's Express which is kinda like a fast food restaurant, but they serve a range of proper Chinese meals as opposed to burgers & kebabs. Very cheap too. I frequented one in the MTR station near where I was staying, last time I was in HKG. After a long day of walking and shooting, I'd get the MTR back to my hotel and stop at Maxim's on the way for supper. Very easy to order, if your Cantonese isn't too hot!

Time to bust out a photo....

If you look close enough you can see the Peak on the left, where the hills dip down to the lowest point. Personally I don't like the Peak that much for taking photos. I can see it's appeal for being the fun touristy thing to do, however photos from there always seem to be of the the backs of buidlings blocking the view of Victoria Harbour. The above is a well known haunt of many a local photographer, it can be reached by bus and a short 5 minutes walk. I recommend giving it a visit if you have time and weather on your side.

Rod, Thats one of the best I've seen great shot and location I'll be sure to try and make it there if the wether is good :notworthy:

I agree with Ed, would look great on canvas.

Chris

Aboslutely stunning pic Rod, wish I had the time (and skill!) when I was there to visit those places. Unfortunately being with the OH meant there was only time for shopping and eating, lol.

Thanks all. Taking photos here heavily depends on the weather, hopefully those of you visiting can have a good few days of clear skies and time off from shopping
