Yes
11 days in the sun with the Missus, 3 mates and their wives.
A stressy last few months at work see me looking forward to this holiday more than usual.....:woot::woot::woot:

Packed the A200, Sigma 17-70mm, Minolta 50mm and Tamron 70-300mm along with spare batts, filters and wipes. Also packed the remote but couldn't fit the tripod in the suitcase so that's about as much use as a chocolate fireguard...never mind.

Hopefully get some decent piccies, never been before so looking forward to exploring a little.
I'll down a beer or two to the nice friendly people on TP
Cheers
Rob

Git!

I would normally be off to Crete next tuesday but a change in the wife's employment means that early september is NOT an option for holidays.

Hope you have a great time there - hint, the further west you go, the more beautiful the scenery and the friendlier the people. Malia should be avoided like the plague unless you're driving a large 4x4 and don't mind the squidgy bumping noise "Brits on the p155" make as they get ground beneath your wheels... Chania old town is gorgeous and although the food isn't cheap, it's worth havong at least one meal at the Amphora restaurant and watching the world go by. For better food, aim a bit further around the harbour, near the centre for architecture - the Karnagio does excellent food at good prices.

As a general tip for finding good food, keep your ears peeled and listen for the Greek voices - even better if they seem to be arguing! Chances are they're just discussing which dish is better!

One last tip, however good the wine might taste there, it really doesn't travel well. Also, if you like Ouzo, I can recommend Ploumari. I have done a LOT of research into the subject and can honestly say that I am always happy to pay a slight premium for Ploumari over other inferior brands.

Thanks for the tips and I will print this one off.
Just waiting for a mate and his wife to turn up from the 'pool and then it's off to Gutwick

If you're renting a car, get down to Elaphonisi beach (Soth Western tip, almost) as early as possible. Just after you hit the dusty road, there's a taverna so you can get brekkie and use the karzi (not good on beach!!!). Falasarna beach (NW) is good too - usually almost deserted.

If you're energetic and like walking, do the Samaria Gorge. Knackering but worth the pain the day after!

Have a good one. I'm hyper as well. Just booked our holliday, also like Dave to Santorini. Soooooo looking forward to it:woot:

I'll do it in the car
;):D

Yes, walk the gorge if you can

I did it about 6 years ago. Probably about a 12 mile walk or so but bloody hell it was impressive!

Some nice photos to be had

Donkey or Shank's pony only :D

And you only get the donkey ride if you can't walk. It's been said that even with a busted ankle, it's more comfortable to walk (or drag yourself on hands and knees) than it is to go down on the donkey.

And by that, I mean be taken to the bottom of the walk on the donkey...

I'm off to Crete in October, let us know of any sights you recommend :D

Tell me where you're staying and where your interests lie.

I know the Western end pretty well and the Eastern end hardly at all (apart from a couple of places) but I'll do my best!

ETA Will you be renting a car? I would recommend it if it's a possibility.
