Off to buy a D700 anyone want to convince me not to?

Like the title says, I'm pretty set moving from my 40D to a D700. Played with it at the weekend and really liked the way it felt.

I'll have 2 lenses that I need to sell (but they might go with the 40D) but the rest I'd need to change to go FF anyway. "It's now or never" as they say . .

I take mostly Landscape/Architecture and Portrait so FF is soooo attractive. Considered the 5D but having held the D700 I just like it.
 
I don't really think you need convincing not to do you :D
 
I don't think you should do it, send me the money instead and let me buy a D700 ;)

if you like it, buy it...it looks good. All the Canon v Nikon violence has to stop....

Go for it !!!! I am sure you won't regret it.

Look at the quality of the images Pete Carr is getting from his D700 !!!!
 
I got mine on Monday...it's a cracking camera - if it feels right and you can justify it then go for it. :thumbs:

What a weird thing to ask. I'm sure no one here will dissuade you from buying a... what was it again? Noobkon d7 thingy. :)

Enjoy I say, as I'm sure you will as it's an excellent camera. Then again, so is your 40D...

I thought of that, but I did that with a 400D when I bought the 40D and have not touched it. Considering the price of second hand gear right now it might be a sensible thing to do to sell the 40D and the gear to recover a chunk of my costs. Maybe just sell the 400D and keep the 40D+kit, hmm . . .

To be fair I am still wavering but that's not for technical reasons.

BTW: I have nothing against Canon cameras at all, have had great use out of mine. I am delighted that this hasn't turned into a fight. It didn't occur that it might until several posts in.
 
If you want it go for it :)

To be honest ALL modern DSLRs will take excellent photos regardless of brand or model, the main thing to consider is how well you get on with the handling, layout and operation of the camera and lenses.
 
I have a 40D and asked myself the exact same Nikon question recently. I have maybe a bit more investment in Canon, but I decided to stay put.

If I was a pro, I would have swapped ages ago. The D3 and D700 are so good they can pay for themselves. But I really can't justify the cost which, at the end of the day, would be many thousands.

Meanwhile, my 40D continues to take great pictures whenever I manage to point it at something interesting, and given the rate of recent sensor development, it really won't be long before the high ISO capability of the D700, and it's amazing AF, will be found in the latest Canon crop cameras. That will happen for sure, I just don't know when, but I'm not in that much of a hurry.
 
The best thing about owning a D700, IMO, is that you can finally stop wondering what it would be like to own a D700 and just get on with taking some of the best photographs you've ever taken :p.

Brian Harris - he of Chief Photographer for the Independent for many years fame....uses a D700 and is quite happy with it and the product of his lenses and eye and then finally the camera sensor.



So they must be garbage!
 
personaly i prefer canon and moving to nikon will be a hassel and will make all your other kit useless basicaly. also canons 5d is a beast of a camera!!!
 
isnt there a pro somewhere uses both nikon and canon dslr?

as a biased nikon user think of all those new and old lens you can use on the d700 :thinking:

I would love a D700, I will probably get one when you start a thread about your new D900 though :D

Oh well, for now I'm still learning how to use the 40d, untill I've mastered that I doubt a better camera would help.

If you have the cash and wont miss it, go for it.
 
No reason to convince you not to at all.

Nikon make some good equipment and at the moment are giving Canon a hell of a run for the money. Personally I've got too much tied up the Canon system just to change, and I much prefer the Canon ergonomics anyway. Of course that may just be the fact that I'm used to Canon, and that Nikon bodies feels alien to me. I'd expect pretty much any Nikon user to feel the same way about how their kit handles in respect to a Canon body.

But if you haven't got that much tied up in a system, and you feel that a different make would be better for you then why not?

Go with what's best for you. Never have any loyalty to a company because they certainly won't have any to you!
 
What exactly do you hope to gain by switching?

Remember it's not just about the camera body. It's about the whole system, and Nikon's range of lenses is surprisingly different to Canon's. I'd suggest taking a good look at the lens line-ups and identifying whether there are any gaps that would matter to you.
