I’ve tried tirelessly to obtain a cheap alternative to use my sb900 speedlight of camera with my D3,, I’ve tried various transmitters none of which where compatible with the D3. I’m shooting my first wedding next year and I want to separate my SB900 from the D3 for more creative lighting control. I would also like this to fire my studio strobe slaves! I’m on a budget also, thanks in advance for any help!

:O W word :O
:O:O:O:O:O:

rf-602s work great and are bloody reliable+cheap enough to keep a spare set in the bag, someone will be along shortly to confirm they work with the D3 ;)

(they come with jacks for studio heads too)

Is there a reason not to use the inbuilt communication between camera and flash when off camera? Nikons commander mode allows a lot of flexibility by way of flash out put and controlling multiple units. I know this doesn't cover your studio flash, but why not use it for the SB900?

i dont think the D3 has a built in flash commander

 it doesn't!! All that money and no commander..... holy poo!

edit: DOH!! Of course not, no on board, but does it not have any kind of CLS using infrared or radio or something? Thats made a decision for me then, definately NOT getting a D3

No, D3 just has a hotshoe no pop-up. but does have CLS

So you are left with either cheap radio triggers (with PC socket for your studio lights also) so that's the 602s or CTR-301P etc or if you want CLS then you are talking expensive radio triggers or SU800 or another SB600/800/900 on camera as a commander

Yongnuo RF-602 seems favourite. From here http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=157807 Other suppliers are available, and probably with more appealing avatars.

You will need one receiver for every flash unit. Check that they come with the right leads, but extra leads are only £3 each I think.

However, if your studio lights have optical slaves built in, which they probably do, you could just sync up your hot-shoe guns with the Yongnuos and they in turn will fire the studio units if their slaves get a decent look at the light. That's how I use them.
