Hi everyone,

Me and my folks are off on a two week cruise next month. We're going round the med visiting Italy, France, Monaco to name a few and sailing on the Thomson Spirit. My main concern is charging up the battery on my 450D (Dad has 40D). The voltage on the ship is 110/120v AC. Will my battery charger work or will I need a voltage converter? Does anyone have any experience with cruising and using their DSLRs? I'm probably worrying unnecessarily but this cruise includes places I've always wanted to go to. I'm still waiting for the travel agent to get back to me.

Thank you in advance

Cruise I was on around america, there were lots of power sockets. 110V there charged my 400d batteries OK

Can't speak for Canon chargers but both my Nikon and my Olympus chargers will accept 100 - 240 Volts at 50 - 60 Hz. You'll need a plug adapter or a lead with the correct plug on the end.

My 450D charger says 100-240v 50/60Hz so you should be ok, take a look at the 40D charger and see if it is the same.

May be an idea to email the shipping line. Get info straight from the horses mouth, so to speak.

My 40D charger says exactly the same thing: 100-240V, 50/60Hz.

So long as you can physically plug it in, it will definitely work.

Just buy a mains plug adapter from the supermarket before you go or argos or something like that. I got 2 for about £4.

Something like that

I bought my 5D mk II from Kerso. It came with a US-style battery charger, that's meant to plug straight into a US power outlet. Mr. K thoughtfully included a shaver adaptor in the box, which works just fine :) Canon chargers have no problems running on either 110V/60Hz or 240V/50Hz AC.

We're going cruisin' in the Med with Ocean Village at the end of the month :) According to the blurb, the cabins have UK-style sockets on 240V AC

You may find that you need an adaptor for using GB plugs in continenetal-style sockets.

Check with the tour operator and (if possible) the liner company as to which sockets are used. Most of Europe runs 220-250V while the USofA use 110, so it's more likely (IMO) that the sockets will be US style rather than European. Multi plugs are available to cover all options so I would get one of them rather than a specific European or US one if there's any doubt.

I've been on the Thomson Spirit (few years ago), and you'll be fine with an adapter as above, but you may also find that they have standard uk sockets, I can't fully remember, but I know I took my video camera and was able to charge it up in the cabin.

NO PROBLEM WHATSOEVER!!! provided your charger takes 110 - 240 v (ish!)

Thank you so much for the help and replies everyone. It's really put my mind at ease. We have a plug adapter - according to the notes in the brochure the ship has both European two pin and UK three pin sockets - won't do any harm to take it anyway.

Thanks again. :)

Hi, I confirm that your charger will work with the travel adapter. I did exactly the same thing on a cruise ship. Would be worth taking more than 1 battery though. Regards Ian.
