Off days

Yes perhaps I will just take a point and shoot on holiday with me.

I don't know a lot about you, but it seems to me, from what I read, that you have been making great progress in the technical side of your photography (especially those kites! :D ). Maybe a trip with the camera without beating yourself up over settings and the technicalities would be a rest AND a chance to take photo's? I'm not suggesting auto (God forbid, I'd be slaughtered! - by the OH as much as anyone else!) but maybe a more relaxed/laid back/shoot for the hell of it approach for a little while?

I wouldn't attribute a bit of a dry spell to any 'disorder' as such, just that you are not as motivated as you were - that could mean (as others have suggested) that a change of scenery could help you get your mojo back, or a break would help.....but, whatever you do, don't go on holiday with NO camera because I think you would regret that!

I enjoy your photo's so just do what you want when you want - no real need to take one a day or anything (as you're in the 52 ;) ).

He made a suggestion and was trying to be helpful, and in your usual attitude you basically told him that he was talking carp and gave a 'keep it to yourself' impression. He was only trying to help, there was really no need to be lippy towards him. Take a pill.

EDIT: If you consider advice to be 'wound up by idiots' then I hate to think what you say to your Doctor when he or she tries to help you. Or anyone for that matter. You sound just like the kind of irritating customers that we have to deal with every day in the office, and then have a chuckle about when the phone goes down.

There is a lot I can say to you but I think I had better keep it to myself before I get suspended.

You seem a person that does not get on with everybody, by reading some of your posts, and that is such a shame as life is too short.

Put it this way you would not want to cross my path when I am having a bad day.!

Thank you so much. for understanding where I am coming from, all I wanted to ask if anyone else felt the same way and as ususal it has got out of hand.

Nicki, put the camera down for a week, have a think about what you want to achieve, think about trying some different settings, then have another go...........

Thanks, ;) am going away next Sat to Arizona so will have a total re-think about the whole thing. No the 7 D is not coming on holiday.

A holiday might be just what you need.

Go back and read this thread and take a moment to look at your behaviour. Twice you have lashed out at people trying to understand and assist you. So calm down, stop having a pop and take a moment to relax. Go for a walk, listen to some music, do whatever floats your boat, but don't take it out on everyone around you.

Hope you do enjoy your holiday. :)

I am going to say a huge thank you for those of you (quite a few in fact) that have taken the trouble to get in touch wiht me one way or another and can see where I am coming from, and offering their support.

Or come down to CWP with me or Stu and a change of scenery :D :D :D

   :D You are not going back again, they will soon be building an enclosure for you and Stu !!!

Going back when the Giraffes arrive.

Briony/Nicki (which is it?) - you're right, I don't get on with that many people at all as, on the whole, I find human beings an incredibly irritating species to be around. However I would never do anyone undue harm, I am always kind and polite, practically always in a jolly mood, and I have never done anyone a bad turn unless they have first done to me. And anyone who knows me will 100% back me up on that.

The thread only got out of hand because, as Bouncy Melons suggested, you lashed out at someone whom you merely didn't agree with.

So let's all have a group hug and put frustrations to one side :)
xx

If you are referring to Yardbent then I have actually sent him a P.M. explaining I was not referring to him at all, and he has got the wrong end of the stick, and to accept my appology.

a couple of nice and understanding PMs between us has indeed cleared the air

have a lovely holiday in Arizona too !.......:D

It's getting to quite an interesting time of year just now. Plenty of colour and action going on. Have you considered a theme such as ' On the farm ' where you could try to find new angles and twists on things ?

Just a thought, Haymaking, Milking, Machinery, Birth ( Farm animals and wild together ), Portraits of the farm hands etc.

Might be a great theme to take on holiday to a far off country.

The problem I find is that there is too much going on and I find it hard to pick a theme so I get a bit stalled and need a boost to start again.
TP helps a lot. Great place.

To be fair to her, I don't think Nikki is the one inciting the bad feeling per se.

I had another look at the thread and what she wrote was "Not at all just so much to do so little time at the moment

Tel you what, I could do with some time in a isolated cottage wanna swop!

I understand where you are coming from but it is NOT "SAD" at all, just lack of Camera motivation, that's all.

Putting it away for a while. "

There is little wrong with that response, IMO. Then look at the response TO that post - if someone responded to me that I was 'self diagnosing' but that a previous poster is probably 'spot on' I would be questioning that as well.

She was merely having a 'omg, CAN'T GET OFF MY B/SIDE, NOT MOTIVATED' kind of a vent and it's now an intervention because she gets ****ed off when being diagnosed by non DOCTORS??

The poor guy who suggested SAD must be cringing right now, but I guess trencheel303 has achieved his/her objective.

Arizona is awesome, try to see Flagstaff, the Canyon, the petrified forest and the desert, take a simple point and shoot and enjoy...........

Then when you get back, I think you may get some very good help offered from a very good photographer............Not me, I hasten to add,I ain`t that good.............

Going back when the Giraffes arrive.

Was supposed to be there today but had a veg day instead which was needed :D Will be back next week I'm sure as Monday-Wednesday I'm off :D

latest update from CWP is the Giraffes are a couple of weeks away and then a while them to get to get used to things before being properly on display!

Did post another CWP post up in zoo's though "frog impersonator" from Sunday that I've ruled out as my entry :D

I was going to suggest a theme too... a few ideas...

A specific colour, shape, signs, windows, doors, street, vehicles, walls, chimneys etc.

When I get bored of something I set myself a challenge.

Have a cracking holiday and see how you get on when you get back. Have a great time, just don't kick yourself because you didn't take your camera!

Daniel.

Hi Nicki

Just do what you feel is right! Take the camera or don't take the camera. it really doesn't matter! ... A hobby is just something to enjoy, you don't have to do it everyday, every week or every month? .. Just do what you feel is right for you! There is absolutely nothing wrong with losing interest  if it comes back then great, but if it doesn't ... so what?

Have a great holiday, take any shots you want to and do it for you. If the shots are just touristy snaps ... so what? .. enjoy them, they'll be a reminder of a great time! Enjoy ....

Remember you are a not pro togger but doing it for fun, so there is no need to feel guilty or fed up if you don't feel like it sometimes. I was going to suggest a change of scene and you are certainly going to get that. Have a fantastic time!

You are quite right ;) and Thank you.

I think you'll kick yourself when you get there if you don't take the camera...the light is...well just amazing...
A Golden Hour that lasts from mid-afternoon til well after sunset... deserts are such spectacular places for photography, unless you're in a position to repeat the trip soon, I think you'll be missing the camera when you look around...

and yeah...hugs are always on offer to those in need...

Thank you, ;)

I am staying in the desert we are "ranching" for the week  apparently it is surrounded by mountains etc. but as we are riding then a point and shoot is going to be the best thing (got to find a good one yet:shrug:)

No, I will not be repeating this trip again it is a one off.

Well unless you're going to be riding all the time, I'd still take the Canon. It can stay behind at the ranch for you to play with in the evenings...

You know I get off days . . . but I think its more like getting stale? I found the motivation to drag heavy kit around was getting me down . . .

I even tried the retail therapy bit, new camera body, D90, you guessed it, hardly came out of its bag!

Some of the above was caused by personal problems; a lack of mobility, advancing years catching up!!!! It was getting hard work.

. . . to cut a story short; I went back to basics, only use an 18-70 lens, makes me think more about what I see. Camera body/one lens, means lighter weight, I have modified a 'man bag', camera with me 24/7 (if I want). Under no pressure, just get on with my life, see a picture, whip out the camera, click and get back to what I was doing.

I no longer think, 'must get out to take some pictures', there is no spontaneity, no sole, like making love, best, take it as it comes . . .

Man bag/camera = freedom!!!

Thank you, ;) you have at least made me laugh with the last comment re. making love :naughty::naughty: that is soooooooooooo right

Go out without a camera...
You'll see loads of things you'll wish you had your camera to record...

This morning, mist over the lake, heron fishing in the shallows very close to the path and not at all worried about me and the dog. We sat there about 40m away watching it fish for about 5 mins.

Thank you, ;) you have at least made me laugh with the last comment re. making love :naughty::naughty: that is soooooooooooo right

Mmm, the pictures I posted, may not be the best, but I enjoyed them. The red Sycamore leaf was all I could do that day, by a duck pond, sun so bright, it just blew out all highlights. So, I got in to the shrubs and trees and started seeing the colours enhanced by the side/back lighting sun, 20 pictures, there were only a couple any good . . . but thats fine, mission accomplished, lunch break over, back to earning a crust.

The yacht, that came from a session fishing at the weekend on my boat. Passing an old classic wooden yacht, missed the best shot, the sun back lighting the sails, however took the full picture, as you do. I was disappointed with the pictures of the full boat, very snapshot'ish . . . hit the wrong key and zoomed in:bonk: Sparked the idea of a 'big' crop . . . I thought this one worked quit well, saving a picture . . .

I do the 'big crop' quite often, get a computer screen worthy picture from a 'snapshot'. Wont print to well, but for computer screen viewing and inspiration for the future, it is good fun.

Here is another, picture I took on the way to work the other day:

Tobacoplant_DSC0125.jpg

Simple weed, we used to call it a 'Tobacco plant' when I was a young'un. I had stopped to do something else, spotted the way the sun was on the petals. Camera out, half a dozen shots, couple of angles and a bracket or two. I'm only using the Nikon 18-70, so I new I would need to zoom and crop, again it pleased me.

All very laid back . . . CJS ;)

that is usually when i am into depression...a regular occurrence for me every year or so..

i take anti depressants and wait for nature to take over

Things go from bad to worse, :( had arranged a day out togging on Wed with someone was really loking forward to it, but have heard nothing more about it :( so I suppose that one is out now also.

Things seem to be stacking up against me :help:

Supposed to be going out for the day next Wed. fingers crossed.

Just hope I get the enthusiasm back by then :bang:

I hope you do get the get up and go, try something different.

Things seem to be stacking up against me :help:

Dont let them, although I am 1 who lets things stack up, this lot on here picked me up and took me to a new height this lasts few days.

Well still have not picked up the camera for well over 2 weeks and arranged a day out togging today, was really looking forward to it ( I also tuned down another one by 2 friends) and looks like that is not going ahead now as not heard anything from a "togging buddy" so no wonder I have no incentive:shrug:  :bang:

Wondering if "togging" is the way for me to go

Still heard nothing from them so rule is "never rely on a togging buddy, even when you help the up, when they are down also !!!!!!!

Thinking back to when you had a few problems with the 450, has the perfectionist side of you got the better again
Higher class equipment, loads more settings and potentially even more scope for things to go wrong as well as right

Perhaps just go away and enjoy the holiday, take a few (loads) snaps on auto and enjoy looking at the pics without worrying over the technicalities

My daughter is very similar by the sound of it and know how fed up she gets sometimes when her slightly obssessive nature takes over rather than just having fun

Could well be that photography isn't for you or at least the more advanced version that many people aspire to here
Sometimes my bonce gets too full of technical stuff and forget why I originally enjoyed it. Gone down the same route as CJS mentioned earlier, Camera and Lens in a shoulder bag and if something catches my eye take a few pics

All the best whatever direction you take, but life is too short for worrying about things especially hobbies which are supposed to be fun

Is there any harm in being a perfectionist  it is not that at all just lost the "mojo" and also having now been let down today by a "togging buddy" who is obviously not  just got to pick myself back up again, but that is the hard bit :bang:

"You know, I've often thought taking photo's was like making love to a beautiful woman. You've got to make sure your equipment is clean, fully charged and ready, get everything in focus, then ...."

bung it in high speed mode and shoot off at 10fps...

sorry thats never happened before.. :gag:

um yes, i know what you mean about off days and motivation. im all equestrian photography'd out at the moment and we're booked solid all the way through to mid august. desperately trying to get out and shoot something different but im either behind the camera working or infront of lightroom working a the moment.

Thank you, ;)

No, I will not be repeating this trip again it is a one off.

I went to Arizona a few years ago and stayed on a ranch not far from Kingman, we did horse riding during the day and lazed around in the evening! It is amazing and although the scenary in pretty much the same in every direction the sunsets across the desert are amazing, I spent my entire week dreading the horse riding and taking silhouettes in the evening!!

Even if you take a P&S you will definitely want a few pictures!! Have a great time ;)
