I am thinking of buying a flashgun to use on a tripod with a soft box. I want to fire it remotely using the commander in my d300. Can anyone give tips, or has anyone got recommends for which gun to buy not the expensive Nikon please as I cannot justify the expense.

Thanks gents one for the list. I was hoping I might get one with the trigger built in.

Youngnuo 568 is a popular cheaper alternative, and would work off the D300 in commander mode, but you'd be better off with radio - much more reliable. Say Yongnuo 685 with 622-Tx commander unit - £110-ish Amazon/Ebay.

Have a look through similar posts in the Lighting forum.

Not tried the godox but have tried the Yn565 and Shanny and am happy with both but as above get triggers as opposed to using the on board flash to trigger.

I did start off this way with my sb800 but was not happy so bought some cheap yn603 triggers but have since bought the yn 622n and tx.

Maybe look for a used Nikon flash gun?

With the exception of the recently introduced SB5000, Nikon doesn't do wireless radio, so limited to light-code commander control.

This is fine indoors, when the remote gun's receiver window has line of sight with the transmitter, or is at close distance. With a softbox, this could be easy if you're lucky, or it could be very awkward or even impossible. This is made much worse outdoors, or even indoors if the ambient light level is high.

With very capable radio controlled units being so affordable now, light-code triggering makes very little sense, but there is also the option to add radio to an older gun with, say, a pair of Yongnuo 622 transceivers.

I thank everyone for your contributions. After looking up the suggested units, I think I will go with the Godox X1 trigger and TT685n flash. TTL/HSS as recommended by T_J_G, although I like the lever lock on the Shanny unit. Thanks again to everyone Charlie.

Hi Charles,

Little_Duke is selling Godox Flashguns for NIkon in the classified section.. .. just thought i'd mention it in case it may be something of interest. ..

Moey!

Thanks for the info, I have already seen the add I would prefer to buy new but will keep my eye on the ad see what his price is if he splits it up. Thanks again. Charlie.

Finally took the plunge. Although there was a strong pull towards T_J_G and sep9001 's recommendations I decided after a lot off thought, on the Shanny SN600SN. I have also purchased an as new used Phottix Strato ttl trigger set.. I have tested the outfit tonight and it works great. Thanks again to all for the help and info. Charlie.

Hi Charlie,

That is a good choices on the flash front as that is what I have to go with my sb800.

Have you thought of any modifiers or are you just using ocf and bouncing off the wall/ceiling?

I already have an old SB-600, and 3 even older SB-24's I use manually wireless triggered. Have been looking for something more powerful and versatile than the SB-600, have just ordered a SN600SN to try for £64.00. They appear to have the best bang for the buck and the better reviews against other sub £100 flashguns. Hopefully we've made the best choice.

I sold my yn565 as did not like the screw on head, the shanny is a lot better and cannot fault the flash.

Hi Kev I am looking to buy a largish soft box and stand now and probably a second unit, also some colour filters. Problem is I have run out of pennies having just bough a mint D90 as well.

Hi Steve. I am well pleased with the SN600SN. Well made product and superb quality for the £64 I paid. I hope you will be as happy with your purchase

That is the problem with photography it gets very expensive.

For the stand get the best you can buy, I bought a cheap konig one from Amazon which is good with a small modifier and use indoors, but have since bought some Lencarta ones and they are a lot better.

For the modifier you can start off which cheap shoot through umbrella or look at one of the godox umbrella softbox.

Does any owner of the SN600SN know what push on diffuser fits it?
