Off-camera shoe extension - do they work

Does anyone know if my existing off-camera shoe extension lead, (for none digital Canon 500N), wil fit a 400D. I am planning to purchase a new flashgun - Sigma 530 and was wondeing if they would be compatible, (with the lead). The lead is a Canon Off-camera 2 lead.

I seem to recall it would probably only work in manual mode on the flashgun. I'm just hoping it won't damage the units.

Assistance appreciated
 
providing that all the 5 (6?) connection points are wired in the lead up it makes no difference who makes the lead or how long (1,2,5 meters) it is.

It'll still work. Its just wire
