Yes
Is the possible on a 40D , and can it be done without any pre flash ?
My thinking is if I'm shooting a person their reaction is to move after the first flash thinking that the shot has been taken when it has not .
I'm only just starting to venture into this so all help would be much appreciated .

Only with a TTL cord I believe.

I thought as much , is there anyway of over coming the ttl pre flash ?

If you just want to get rid of the pre-flash, switch the gun to manual.

If you also want second-curtain sync, then with Canon you can only get that either with a cord, or by using Pocket Wizard Mini/Flex radio E-TTL triggers. You can also do it with a regular manual radio trigger using an optical slave workaround, but that's a bit complicated.

Cheers Hoppy . I'd heard that even pw's wouldn't even do it . Looks like i'll have to try and source a long TTL cord though as can't really afford / justify pw .
I guess to use any other trigger i'd have to put a flash on camera hotshoe in manual on low power ( so no pre flash .) Then attach a slave trigger to the front of that with cheepo trigger attatched to that o fire 2nd / 3rd flash . Or could I use the on camera flash to trigger an off camera flash in slave and try to flag off the on camera flash to avoid spill if that make sense ?

Yes, you've got the workaround there. You can't do it with the pop-up because you can't disable the pre-flash on a 40D, though as mentioned above you can of course pre-fire the pre-flash with the FEL* button so that for the actual picture you've only got the main flash firing at second-curtain. I do it with a little 270EX gun (under £100).

Also note that the standard Canon system disables second-curtain at anything above 1/25sec. Pocket Wizards (Mini/Flex and also Multi i think) deffo do second curtain via radio remote (at speeds well above 1/25sec) and also you can fine tune the timing so it's exactly at the end of the second curtain's travel (normally, it's a fraction before).

Thanks again Hoppy , I'm only wanting to use it at the minute for low light portraits so high speed snyc isn't an issue . It looks like some serious cash will have to be spent if i do decide that I need it at a later date . I guess all thats needed is me to get out there and give it a go now :)
