Off camera Flash

I have a Sony a77 and a Sony HVL-F42AM Flash unit

I want to shoot off camera using a sync Cord- I purchased an off camera cord and an L shaped bracket to hold the flash approx. 6 inches to the left of the lens etc....

My question is what settings both in camera and on flash should I used, as I cannot get this set up to work unless I use the wireless setting and trigger the off camera flash with the built in flash on the a77

Help please confused of Taunton

If you use wireless then you have HSS support so can choose higher shutter speeds. Does it still fail to work when you use shutter priority mode and 1/60th or 1/125th?

not tried any priority modes-only Manual I'll give that a go thank you

I did consider this as an option to the sync cable, Yes / No?? I can get all I need using wireless so I'll order the trigger/ Receiver set

I have only ever used wireless flash. I've never tried a sync cord. I wouldn't have a scoobie sadly!

Some kind of hotshoe extension so the flash thinks it is on the camera seems like the best idea. It's just finding one which is properly compatible.
 
I can after a fashion get the gun to fire in Shutter speed priority mode but cannot adjust the flash strength

I have ordered a set of Wireless triggers so no need for cables etc., I borrowed a trigger and receiver from a friend and all works well - I only use the flash for Macro so flash power adjustability is a must

If you are using TTL based flash then I think you have to use exposure compensation on the camera to reduce the flash amount. Do you have it set to fill flash or full type flash on the camera?

If you set the gun to manual you should be able to set the flash ratio.
 
I have the gun set to Manual full type flash and adjust the power on the rear of the gun the problem using TTL was not enough light

Hmmm. I think I had similar issues trying to do the same and just gave up and used the wireless flash option as that just worked.

My trigger/Receiver should arrive today, so I'll keep you posted
