I have a Nikon D90 with a Ninkon SB600 flash and I'm trying to work out how to use my flash off my Camera. I only have the one flash but sometimes I could do with the light from a different angle but from looking in my manual I can't work out how to set it up. Can anyone help me or tell me it's not possible so I can stop playing with all my settings. Thanks

S1 or S2 mode on the flash, if that mode if available it will fire with the inbuilt flash on your camera, or a commander mode setting for the inbuilt flash depending what is available on the D90 should do it from what I understand, fairly new to this myself so I can't say for certain.

Just took a look at the D90, it does have a Commander mode for the inbuilt flash, it will be in the menu system of the inbuilt flash to turn it on I think.

Set the Sb600 in remote mode:-

The commander menu is apparently in custom setting E2 on the D90 (go figure)

I always add the commander menu as the first item of the "My Menu" on all my Nikons. I then set the otherwise useless AE-Lock button to fire up the first item on the My Menu, so I have a button that brings up the commander menu to change the remote flash settings etc D90 supports "My Menu":-

That's been a massive help. I have got my flash working wirelessly and also found out some other really handy tips from the last link you posted. Thank you again.

When you set your d90 to commander mode you can also set it so the camera flash is off, it still fires but at a fraction of a second out of timing so it sets of the remote flash unit but does not affect the picture.
I have several flashes but prefer to use one to the side of the model then a reflector on the other side to fill any harsh shadows.
You will need to set your off camera flash to remote mode and i would suggest setting it to manual mode as you have much more control over the light.
I find using the camera flash as a trigger very constricting so I would really recommend buyin
a remote trigger, I use a hahnl it was only fifty quid and is excellenmt, and i use it all the time at weddings..
It will work through walls and up to 100 meters
Hope this helps.
Chris
