Off camera flash

Hi everyone

I am a complete newbie when it comes to speedlights. I have been thinking of buying one to go with my d3100 but don't have a clue what settings to look for or what is decent flash. I do know that I want to be able To use it off the camera when needed.

I am aware that the Nikon ones are expensive but there is probably a good reason or he price tag.

Any advice would help.

I shoot with strobes, but if I ever had to buy a flash, I'd definitely go with Nikon.

That being said, they aren't too expensive either, you can pick up second hand older models, which are still brilliant, for really cheap. Have a look on eBay for the older SB's, you'll find a bargain.

Oh, and try and get a couple if you can, off-camera gets very interesting once you start using multiple lights!

I have an Sb900 (expensive++) and a Nissin (good, much more reasonably priced). Started off doing off camera with a TTL cord, then used the CLS system (not sure if the 3100 has a commander mode?)

I don't think the 3100 has a commander mode. So to trigger you would either need a flash with a slave mode triggered by your on camera pop up flash or a set of wireless triggers.

I have an SB600 (Nikon) which triggers via camera commander mode and also a Sigma unit that triggers from any flash. Both are good units.

Go manual with the Yongnuo 460mkII for around £50 I use 2 with my Canon kit and they are great.

Get some rf602 triggers if they go with Nikon and you are set...

This is exactly what I have. (single flash and RF602 trigger at the minute) I'm happy enough with the results. I'm getting a couple more flashes soon for variation.
