Off camera flash

Do you want to use flash in your images? If the answer is yes, that is your answer.
 
Do you have a flash or just the pop up one?

Changing to an external flash will make a big difference.

I'm reading more on flashes to learn what I can do with one

Get a cheapy yongnou flash and some rf602's and give it a go :-)
 
I only have pop up one at mo but disappointed with the way my photographs have been coming out in general. Losing heart with it a bit a the moment. Just signed up to do the pp bootcamp so looking forward to that

The small flash on a dSLR is not that different to a small flash on your compact! You are not alone in being disappointed. Taking photographs is easy..... Making images requires knowledge about light and how to use it (be that camera flash or natural light).

PP is only a part of the process. You need a good image to start with before moving onto PP.
 
Have a look at http://strobist.blogspot.com/ - especially the lighting 101/102 sections (scroll down and look fro the drop down menu. Whilst you don't need to do manual off camera as a first step, the inspiration he has given me is immense....
 
Have a look at the ken Rockwell site in my Sig and search for sb400. There is a great rollover image showing the benefit of bouncing the flash.

Then clearly you do need a separate gun.

There's a bit of a learning hurdle to get over with flash, but it's really so well worth it. It's learning to use light, instead of just learning to use a camera.

BTW, you don't need the gun to be off camera, and in fact it's a heck of a lot easier if you don't, at least at first. You just need the light to be off camera ;)
 
Once you've used a proper flash gun, it becomes quite offensive to have to use a pop up flash ever again;-) just having the ability to bounce the flash off the ceiling completely transforms your pics.

I only use my built in flash now to trigger the main flash. The only down side i can think of is you now need to carry a bulky flash gun around as well. However, it'll be worth it.
