Yes
Bearing in mind I know nothing about flash photography I want to try some off camera flash , near where I live is a bike jump park and a few of the local lads have agreed to a photo shoot

I want to set an off camera flash up next to one of the jumps

my question is how can I achieve this with my limited equipment ?

I have a D90 but my speedlight is a Jessops afd300 , is there a way of mounting this to my tripod and firing it remotely from my D90 ?
I realise this might be a daft question but uf someone could point me in the right direction i'd be very grateful

thanks

I can't remember if it has an optical slave or not, but if it does you can trigger it from the onboard flash on your D90 (not in ttl mode as the pre-flash will set the 300 off too early), failing that a set of triggers would be the best bet, however the 300AFD only fires at full power so it's not really the best for ocf use.

thanks for your reply

budget is very tight a moment so trying to do this as cheap as poss at the moment , could i use some sort of diffuser to lessen the flash's power ?

how much are triggers ?

again thanks

you could just use a flash cord they come in lengths, up to 5 mtrs:thumbs: about £10 on fleabay

You can play around with the aperture on the camera to adjust the exposure of the flash-lit portion of the image, however it's not ideal

what about mounting the flash to the tripod ?

thanks

Did you get a PC sync cord with your flashgun?
If so, you can easily use a peice of 2 core wire (speaker wire) to extend it.

Also, empty a carex liquid soap bottle, remove labels, cut off the top and that will act as a diffuser. You can also put paper napkins over the flash gun (watch the heat though) to diffuse the light and calm it down a bit.
To mount the flash to a tripod, you may need a cold shoe or use gaffa tape.

no i didnt get a sync cord with my flash it looks like i'll have to buy one , are they camera specific or universal ?

thanks for the diffuser ideas

PC sync cord is universal.

there is no socket for a sync cable on the Jessops flashgun and it is a sod to trigger off camera outdoors with the inbuilt infra red sensor.. Why not get some RF602 triggers for it? They are cheap enough..

I have the Jessops flash, but hope to be moving up to a portable lighting rig asap...
