Anyone know any GOOD guides on OCF?

I'm after something that deals with power output in manual rather than "this is a soft box".

My wireless triggers won't support TTL, so not going to be much use reading or watching about the latst pocketwizards etc. I'm a canon system user so again.....nikon's CLS is of no interest :D

Podcast or youtube would be good also

A meter is a good start if you don't have one.

best link I've ever clicked on, actual article I skipped as this connection is dodge for the vid spent the last 45 mins reading and printing to pdf half a dozen different blog posts I wandered over

thanking you muchly :p

The video is hillarious....."Recession lighting for $25" - "The most expensive thing I'll be using is my $25 mini flash" oh and a 580EXII and a 5D MKII

If you have the time and can get hold of david hobby's (strobist guy) dvd I'd really recommend it, it's great for OCF but it's quite long, it's basically one of his day seminars but theres a lot to go at.

its no different to other light sources. basics are

if using manual then you'll have to meter the output either with a flash meter or trial and error.

light is more intense closer to the subject, light is more diffuse the further away from the subject

then you can control the shape of light with attachments; snoots to make a spot, barn doors to control bleed off, soft box to diffuse the light. you don't even have to buy attachents either a snoot can be made from black straws, a barn door from black card, and a soft box with thin white cloth and black card.

The use of strobe to describe flash is very popular on the internet but incorrect so you can blame the yanks for that one.

Not had time to check back here due to other non photographic commitments :(

Got plenty of reading to fire into now :)

There's a new one called Speedliting which is Syl Arena's baby - he is a Canon user who knows his onions, he's trying to help Canon users get the best out of our portable lights. It has a new forum dedicated to Canon Flash as well, early doors for that but it's growing reasonably well. Oh, and his blog type thingy is called Pixsylated, it's pretty intereting too. All three worth a look I'd say.

Look up the "inverse square rule", I think its that anyways? Will help you a LOT!
