i would like to be able to take pictures (or learn to take pictures) with off camera flash. i have a canon 40D and 430EXii speedlight (think thats right) flash.

what im wondering is what equipment i need to be able to take pictures and place the flash else where.

been told this is what i would need ST-E2
the problem i have is i have read somewhere that this needs to be in direct line with the camera to be able to work and the stuff i want to try is of cars which would be outside

SO

is this the right thing i need or is there an alternative and maybe something abit cheaper as i will be no to taking arty shots

thanks jamie

As long as you are happy using manual flash I suggest you get a set of Yongnuo RF-602's. Its a radio trigger and therefore you don't need to worry about line of sight between flashes like with the infra-red systems. Only 28 quid from FITP for 1 trigger & 1 receiver. You can then get more receivers for any more flashes you add to your set-up in the future. Think their range is about 100m which is plenty for most situations.

For ETTL you would need to use Canons wireless system using either a ST-E2 as you mentioned or a 580exII placed on camera would trigger your 430exII too. Both are pricey.
Other option is forking out hundreds for pocket wizards.

You will get a lot more help/advice in the lighting forum, maybe one of the kind mods will move the thread.

The rule with E-TTL outside is to avoid bright sun and keep the master-to-slave distance down. A 10m dedicated cord will usually sort this out, about £40 from FlashInThePan (advertiser on here).

Or just stick the 430 on the end of the cord. That gives really cheap, reliable remote E-TTL flash, if you can live with the cord of course.

I have the Yongnuo RF-602 and is a great piece of kit. You'd have to set the flashes manually but that's not such a problem.

If you are starting to use off camera flash I would'nt invest in something more expensive yet.

thats what i was thinking i moght not like it etc. cheers for the advice people
