Yes
I recently borrowed a sigma 170-500 ADO lens off my neighbor and after my first use of it on Sunday it now seems that the lens will only work if using f.5 any higher numbers and i get an error message saying that the communication between the lens and the camera is faulty.

I really hope that the lens is not broken as it is not mine and im rather short of cash. So if anybody knows what is going on some advice would be greatly received.

Thanks
joe

tried cleaning the contacts?

Hi Joe, welcome to TP :)

What camera are you using the lens on and what mode are you shooting in?

yeah iv tried cleaning the contacts don't no how successful i was ***. I'm using a 450d shooting in fully manual mode. Thanks for the quick response and the warm welcome to TP

:( i need help please

You may find that the chip in the lens wont communicate with the camera. This may be the case if the lens is an "older" model. Sometimes the lens can be rechiped by Sigma. It's not an unusual procedure so give Sigma a ring with the lens details ( probably need the serial no) and see if they think this is the problem

I'm shooting from the hip with this advice so ignore me if I'm totally wrong.

I have recently got a 50mm prime and when I first attached that to my D300 I got an error message but I soon realised that it was because the apature was being set on the lens rather than on the camera. On the 50mm lens you have to set it to F22 which locks it and allows the digital adjustment of the apature through the camera controls.

Could your problem be something similar?

I take it your neighbour has yet to find out about this.

I suggest you come clean with him.
May be nothing wrong with the lens and it will work fine on his camera.

I think that's the best option, iv just been through the photos i took using the lens on Sunday and it looks like it was always using the lowest possible f number either F.5 or F.5.6 depending on which end of the lens was in use. So i just think its my camera that wont work with the lens rather than the lens being broken.

Cheers for the advice
joe

That's odd, f/5.6 is the max app canons will attempt af at, when using a teleconverter.
I dunno, might be related...coincidence
