Odd error in trying to open images within Win 10

Since updating Adobe CC Photoshop to 2017 I am having an issue opening jpeg files from within Windows ... these are jpeg images created in Photoshop 2015.5.
Double-clicking on the jpeg brings up the following error box:-




It seems that it is trying to open the images in 2015.5, which was removed with the update to 2017.

I click on the image and go to 'Properties' and scroll down to 'find another application' and navigate to Program Files > Adobe > Photoshop 2017 > Photoshop.exe and click apply but it still wants to open in 2015.5

Any other way I can select PS 2017 as the option to open the images?
Incidentally dragging the image into the Desktop PS 2017 icon works fine as does the normal use of Photoshop 2017.

Have you tried right clicking on a JPEG, choosing "Open With" and selecting your fresh option?

Yes Nod, it only displays Photoshop 2015.5 as a PS option, it's as though 2017 hasn't been recognised even though it is fully installed and working.

Not something silly like 2015.5 needing to be uninstalled before 2017 is recognised as a separate new piece of software, is it?

Think i had a similar problem with bridge and it needed the desk top icon deleting and a new one making,the icon was related to the old version not the new one.

The Adobe auto-installer (Creative Cloud Desktop) said it was removing "older versions" and 2015.5 isn't showing as an option to remove in Control Panel > Uninstall a programme. It is still showing as a folder in Program Files > Adobe, though so are the original CC, version 2014 and version 2015

Ah that might be it, it didn't remove the old icon so I renamed it and linked it to 2017 (which it opens when clicked) ... may have bypassed something.

Nope, tried replacing the desktop icon but I still get the same error box and right click again shows 2015.5

Right click and open with, then select something else like paint. Does that work?

It's definitely a .jpg in the file properties?

Only other thing you can try is uninstall cc and download the Adobe cleanup tool, run that then reinstall. Had it before where an upgrade hasn't quite succeeded.

Yep opens with Paint and definitely a jpg file in properties.

Can you not open jpg by default with 2017?

No idea how to do this in Win10 but it is a Control Panel option in Win 7.

I would normally just associate the jpg image with the software by right click > 'Properties' however it simply will not make the change.
Strangely some other extensions are showing as associated with Photoshop CC 2017 so I don't know why there is this issue ... ATM I have to drag and drop any jpgs into the Desktop icon
