Hi,

Can anyone recommend an octobox please? I'd like it to be about 6 foot across and it needs to attach to an Elinchrome Style 400 head unit.

Thanks for your help - Graeme.

Ultimate option, Elinchrom Octabank, but be prepared to drop the best part of £1k on the bank and stand. Depends on your budget

Thanks for all of the advice. Budget is only up to £250 I'm afraid.

Bit smaller I know, but the Elinchrom 135cm octa is in budget, and it's awesome.

In my opinion one of the strengths of the Elinchrom system is the ability to use the deflectors in the centre of the modifiers. Using a deflector but no diffusers on the 135cm can give you a gorgeous beauty dish-esque light, or put it behind you, crouch and shoot for a result similar to a large ringflash.

The profold/bessel speedbox stuff makes this an impossibility as it folds out like an umbrella, and has a shaft in the centre. You can't fit a deflector with these.

If youre happy to spend £250, I'd really recommend having a look at the larger Elinchrom octas, they're extremely well made, stupidly easy to put up, they're beautiful modifiers.

Maybe a Lastolite 2m Umbrellabox? I've only used the 1m one, but reverse firing might even the light out a bit http://www.lastolite.com/umbrellabox.php

You can also use a Highlite as a big softbox - Lastolite make a stand for it.

Edit: personally, I would just go for the Lencarta 150 Profold if it's big enough. BTW the Elinchrom deflector will fit - bit of a fiddle to get it in (remove Elinchrom adapter first to gain access) but there's room inside the mechanism.

depressingly, even the adapter to be able to put it on my lights is £150...

Good to know

Another vote for Rotalux octas, either 135cm or 175cm. Can only compare them to Bowens softboxes, must say while the Bowens are great, the Rotalux softboxes are better in my opinion. :)

Well, they will fit and they won't - the Elinchrom deflector/diffuser caps that is.

So to be clear, this one will fit being 138mm diameter, though it's v close http://www.theflashcentre.com/elinchrom-translucent-deflector-with-rod-i249.html but these ones won't http://www.theflashcentre.com/elinchrom-new-4-piece-deflector-set-i5399.html They're 145mm diameter for some strange reason so you'd need to take a file to them clear the Profold cage mechanism.

It wouldn't be a hard job at all if that's what you want, and final caveat, I've only tried it on the 70x100 Lencarta Profold softbox, so that also assumes all the others share the same mechanism.

Thanks to everybody for the advice, really appreciated. I'm going to have to do some more research (but I'm leaning towards the smaller Elinchrom!)

You won't regret it ;)

Whats the point of buying new kit to have to modify it to accept other accessories...Just buy the right one in the first place.

What's the point? About £200 saving and the OP originally stated a £250 budget. So it's an option, if you feel you need it.

Or put that another way, two nice modifiers instead of one. We all have to draw the line somewhere.
