I don't understand why people have an obsession with selling on Ebay! :cuckoo:

I can understand if an item would not sell elsewhere!

I was told about a D700 for sale.....found out about it last night....Rang the guy this morning, and he said that he has already put it on the bay....

I offered to take it off his hands...all he had to do was either end the auction early, or put a BIN price.....But he wanted to let the auction run :cuckoo:

I stated that he would save on ebay and paypal fees by selling to me, but he weren't having none of it! :gag:

I know you would probably get a little more on the bay for an item, but by the time you have paid fees etc....you're back to square one! :bonk:

Am i missing something? /Rant Over/ :bat::D

I have sold used stuff on Ebay for more than they can be gotten new, it still surprises me. Also I have sold stuff for a lot less than I really wanted it to go for, most of them time thou I am happy with the sale.

I would try to sell here first however.

Quite agree,I sold a lens on another forum and was told it was too cheap.I looked at what they were selling for on Ebay and by the time I had knocked off their fees and paypal fees I got more for it.
I watched a camera sell on Ebay the other day which I had seen for sale on another forum.
The seller refused £50 below his asking price, eventually sold it for his asking price and paid £90 in fees.
Perhaps some people can't do maths

I can understand if they put it straight on ebay.

But this was on another forum, so the chap obviously wanted to sell it on there....but then decided ebay was the way forward

People want the most they can get for an item, eBay is usually where they get it

eBay is just ridiculously addictive full stop.

At one point a few years ago I was just buying stuff on there for the sake of it, ended up with a new phone, new monitor and a giant beanbag just for a laugh.

I still buy loads of stuff on there, coffee and toothbrush heads seem to be the most frequent.

Both used baby.

Wack, with the said item, by the time they've paid fees, I would have given the same sort of amount.... :)

I don't usually buy a lot on eBay but when it comes to selling eBay is the best so far...

I listed my 85mm f/1.8 on ebay. Purely because the prices on there are better. I sold it on BIN within 1 day for £255 plus £10 postage. One went on here last week for £190 and that was haggled down. Even with the £10 or so fees, Im still alot better off.
This is great forum, but thats too much money too loose in these times.

Also people like to build up their feedback by selling on ebay, and lots of people like buying on ebay and using Quidco. I bought my D700 and 24-70 on the bay and got over £30 cashback through quidco.

The last few secondhand D700s have sold on ebay for £1510 £1555 and £1600 + up to £25 postage

I offered you mine for £1400 on AVF including special delivery, you wanted to pay £1300, even after fees I'd clear £1450 on ebay so I don't think you're being realistic with your valuation.

If you quote ebay prices on AVF they start waving their arms about but like it or not it's the what decides the market value, if you can find one for £1300 you've got a bargain.

Wack, I thought eBay charged 10% on final value, plus insertion and paypal fees?maybe I'm wrong?

I actually missed out by a day, on one I saw for £1300 which had only 4000 actuations....the reason for creating this thread was because this chap had it for sale at that price, and I didn't see it til late, after he put it on the bay. I offered him £1300 which was what he wanted, but he wanted the auction to finish...

IMO, it's not worth paying any more than that as a new one can be had for not alot more - £1575....

Really Gary? How do you get away without paying any fees?

Buyers/potential buyers usually ask if im happy to deal outside ebay, if im selling then of course i am provided payment is Bank Transfer or cash up front, you simply then pull the auction, no ebay fees other than listing fees and no paypal fees. :D

Typically 3% on technology/photography related items plus listing fees.

even when they do charge 10% it's capped at £40 so a £1500 sale would only pay £40 in final value fees.

You do get the occasional bargain, while looking through completed listings I found one that sold for £1000 BIN but that would have been on there for about 30 seconds and I'm not kidding.

There are traders that sit there all day refreshing the screen looking for low priced BIN they can sell on, the winner of that one has 15,000 feedback all in photography

...and its more than likely that both the suspiciosly-cheap camera was stolen and the 15,000 feedback'er doesn't pay a penny in taxes on his trading profits... I'd love to be proved wrong on both counts but I doubt it...

As for auction madness - 'twas always thus, I remember going to the Millenium Dome auction and watching anything that was small enough to fit in a van being sold to DavesDodgyDisco for more than it cost new...bizarre...

You'd have to be nuts to sell on ebay without declaring every sale, it's not a car boot, every purchase and sale is recorded by ebay, if HMRC wanted to check up it'd take about an hour

Ah ok, if its capped at £40 then it doesn't work out too bad then.

Theres still a risk of buyers being dodgy though! I've heard some horror stories in the past!

I'd always attempt to sell on a forum first, and then at a VERY last resort go to the bay.....

People also sell on ebay because there are many unwary buyers who don't establish the facts about the items being sold. Just to be clear, I am not suggesting that is the case by people on here for one moment.

I am watching Canon 100-400's at present and the number of times i have made enquiries about the date code on lens listed as "nearly new" only to find they are 6-7 years old is common.

Made enquiries about two recently; one is a youngster selling because grandparent bought lens for a course which wasn't needed and no reply has been received to my questions.

The second is said to be brand new and an unwanted birthday present. Seller replied 8 minutes later to say away from home so can't get date code. Not quite sure why this stops him answering whether the receipt is available, when the lens was bought and if it has been registered for warranty yet! Not a newbie either; has 1500+ 100% feedback.

I quite understand that ebay is a gamble but both items have bids on them so perhaps other people are not as concerned as i am about such matters.

Wouldn't mind being on a present list where i am bought £1200 lens without knowing whether i need them or not either!

I must admit that I have been lured by Ebay a few times, A few years ago I was doing quite a trade in small pieces of computer hardware.

The market seemed that fluid that I could buy something from Scan/Aria and test it out then sell for the same price or even slightly higher at times on eBay.

Since my other half lives in Sheffield, I have found the Sheffieldforum - the forum part is unbelievably good comedy, the idiocy of some posters is second to none on there!

It has a classified section on there, It's great if you live in Sheffield, everything is less than a 20 minute drive, I have bought a LOT of stuff on there, and sold some on for profit. I'm sure a lot of it is stolen though.

2 weeks ago, I got a new Squeezebox that still had its shrinkwrap for £100 :)

Anyone local needs to check it out!

I am currently looking at upgrading my Nikon D50 to a used D90.

Ebay seems to have plenty of them second hand and as I can't see the for sale section here, I am either looking at a store or ebay really. Store prices are more so ebay makes sense.

I will probably again ebay the D50 once I have one as again, I can't sell it on here until I have (I believe) made 100 posts. Not one to spam the forums to get there, so will have to look elsewhere.

So thats my reason I will look at ebay.

I have a friend who is into Karting.

He had access to trade price Draper tools and pushed a few out on eBay aimed at karters.

He sold quite a few pieces for more than they could bought on the Draper website (not cheap in itself as most stockists discount to some extent from list prices).

So for the sake of opeing another window and Googling the item description they buyers could have saved money!!!!
