I've just applied to unlock the OH galaxy off o2 pay as you go (she's gone abroad so needs a 3 sim so we can text back and forth etc for free) and gone through the process and after they took payment and details said they'll be email in 28 days! Is this how long it takes to unlock!? She's back at the end of August so wondereing if I've done a silly thing now - I could have sworn I saw something saying it only takes 24 hours or so - any people know any better here?

Not even 24hours. If you find your average mobile phone repair shop they can do it in an hour. Or go on ebay and some people sell codes for £10. You just pay them and they send you a code and easy instructions to follow.

Pop into an O2 store, they should be able to sort it out there and then

Try an O2 store, but the one where my wife bought her phone wouldn't do it, citing their liability risk if anything went wrong. They referred her to a small phone repair shop in the same mall, per Paul's suggestion, and they unlocked it in 15 minutes. The guy did say it's 'own risk' but I think that's minimal nowadays.

O2 actually told us the other shop 'do it for our customers all the time' which could have been interesting if the phone died, and we pointed out that we acted on their 'professional advice'!

Ah drat I've already paid the dollar! It's a tricky one, as she's got the phone with her in the states, I don't mind paying the £15 so long as it'll be reasonably quick, I just got worried then when I read the 28 days later! So long as it's done within a couple that will be fine. Do O2 actually contact us then, or is it best to just drop in the new SIM card in a bit then?

I would get a cheap 3 PAYG handset/SIM and get her to use that while she's away. No farting about with unlocking and the problems that could (apparently) cause and would give you a spare handset and number should you want/need one.

Go into the O2 shop with your details and ask them to sort it out there and then.

If they say they cant then they are lying

Happy days, all sorted and unlocked - hello 3 feel like home free roaming! Thanks guys! :)

I hope you have already had the 3 sim for a while? Their free usage in certain overseas territories only applies after you have had the sim activated for one month.

Does it!? I topped up and got her the booster for 30 days and so far its fine - she's text and called me back and all alright? I did only buy the sim a week ago to..

There is no waiting period with Three Feel at Home on PAYG.

I stand corrected, then. When I used Feel at Home last Sept/Oct in the US I had to buy into the contract one month before departure. It appears to have changed. I'm currently using it in Mallorca. It's great for using satnav on a smart phone rather than using the weird devices you are sometimes given by car hire firms.

It is great BUT Vodafone, Movistar, Orange & Yoigo all throttle internet speed.

Seems to be working alright so far, I don't know what network it roams onto over there though!
