Hi guys,

Has anyone used one of these?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Macro-Flash-Ring-NIKON-SB800/dp/B0044II3IU

Are they any good?

I'm not a pro (although eventually I'd like to be shooting on the same level - wouldn't everyone ;) ), and don't take portraits often, but is it worth the punt for the odd usage. Obviously if I get better at portraits and want to take it more seriously I will upgrade.

I already have a speedlight, but it doesn't give the ring effect and sometimes I find it hard to tame.

I would welcome your thoughts.

thank you

Jim

Used one. Ok for macro. Portraits......jury's out for me. Tear shaped catchlight and very flat lighting.

That said it was relatively cheap and worth a punt.

I lent it to a mate last year - he's still got it!!

As an on board modifier, I use the rogue flash bender - often angling the flash away from the subject and bouncing it back towards them - just a bit less harsh than direct light. I suppose you would get similar from a bounce card of some description but this is what I use.

You can also use it with a diffusion panel to use it as a small softbox - have to get fairly close with it -

Hope that helps

Cheers for the advice, it sounds like your in no rush to get it back from your mate (which says a lot about the device).
I'm from castleford, how about you?
