NYC Street Photography - Bruce Gilden

I wonder how many times he's been thumped? You notice he didn't take the shot of the bruiser in the white tshirt, although you could tell he was thinking about it....great street pics though.

 no fear.. he must have come up against a few people that have turned nasty in his time, great photos ***.

very fearless but I'm not sure I appreciate the up close and personal style, rather see people in the surroundings they're in rather than just shocked people!

Gritty.. in your face.. (Or THEIR face!) how it should be done.. lol..

I like what he did, but i havent got the bottle to go around liverpool taking shots in that fashion!!

Wonder what sort of reaction he'd get in South London:lol:

i found him incredibly rude, imposing on people and found the stills in that picture to be badly composed.

then again im not a fan of that style of photography

I really don't like him. Far too imposing, and i bet most of those people felt pretty intimidated having a camera shoved in their face like that.

Imposing and rude, but if people want to go out in public... they'd better watch out for the crazy street togs ;)

I guess he thinks the results are worth the risk. I agree that the results are really good - how else do you get such great shots?

wonder how he would react if he was Pap'd when he was least expecting it.

He does have balls though and is an old man now so i guess he has got over the days of people hitting him.

I'd be more worried about my camera being destroyed than being punched!

But there are some amazing shots there. I don't think it's rude, certainly not as rude as charity muggers ("chuggers") for example.

Takes serious cohones though.

Got some good "real life" Photos there, its a good way of getting people naturaly when you dont expect it but dont think i could do it and defo not in NYC

Been waiting for a "how to shoot street" thread to pop up, to post this vid.
Although, I'd probably re-title it "How to get knocked out PDQ on the streets of Yorkshire".
I think NewYork is one of the few places you can get away with shooting like that.
Its not great, he's not a particularly attractive personality, I think Meyerowitz street manner is much better, less in your face, confrontational, he has a way to communicate, almost ask permission with body language, expression...a nod and a wink....its an art in its self.
Gilden is just rude and invasive, he say's its dangerous, but he makes it dangerous with that kind of style.

I'd think you'd get away with it in yorkshire, but British culture values subtlety a bit more anyway.

I'm not sure I'd like to be that aggressive about street, I tend to try and make the subject think I'm aiming to photograph something else, even if I'm only a foot or two away.

I hate it - bl**dy ambush photography...might as well just mug people for all the connection and sensitivity his photographs impart...

i would like to photograph under new york, i have this fascination with the mole people

Now there's a man I'd never tire of punching.

I guess you can get away with it in a country where every nutter can carry a gun. People probably think before they start something that could escalate out of proportion.
But in this country he would soon get bored with having to get that camera surgically removed....

I think the guy is a complete a***hole.
I'd be severely tempted to punch him or knock his camera out of his hands if he did that to me.
