Edit My Images
No
I wonder if anyone could give me the benefit of their knowledge on this one.

I have Nikon capture which came free with my D300. I have bought a book on the software and used utube tutorials but after a year I find capture a bit limiting. Now this may be just may lack of knowledge / ability with capture.

My frustrations are in editing images and adding watermarks. Particulary edits on specific parts of the images or removing dustspots etc.

Are capture and photoshop broadly the same or does photoshop have more features?

Or do I need to re read the book etc.

Many Thanks

I assume you mean Nikon Capture NX2.

I use it all the time and do not find it particularly limiting.

You cannot add watermarks and there is no clone tool but I just use Paint.Net for those (free download).

I use the heal tool for dust spots and, when editing specific parts, I use either Colour Control Points, Selection Control Points, the Lasso Tool or the Selection Brush.

Which book did you buy? I have After the shoot by Mike Hagen and RealWorld Capture NX2 by Ben Long

Assuming the Nikon software is like the Canon DPP software (hopefully someone can confirm this), it will be more like Lightroom/Aperture than Photoshop/Elements.

Elements is good for working with layers etc, but if you like the method of working in the Nikon software Lightroom may be worth a look, as you can do watermarks and local adjustments etc. My suggestion would be to download the trials and see how you get on.

I use all the Nikon software suite and find it's the best for me, straight forward to use. some tutorials can be seen here

I paid for the nx 2 after the trial period and very pleased with it so far.

There are some utube videos but mostly in japanese.:(

Thanks everyone and in particular Survv.

The book I have is Capture NX by Ben Long.

I don't have money to waste at the moment and its obvious I need to work on learning NX which seems to have the capability

Cheers

Capture NX all the way as it allows me to create profiles in the camera, controlling things like Saturation, Contrast, Dynamic Lighting, Sharpening and so on.....and then, in the computer, the RAW file will show all those choices...but ONLY if you open in NX.

Photoshop and as far as I know, all other applications, fail to read this "in camera processing".

For me, it means I can have the benefits of a precanned workflow, and yet maintain the editibility of raw files.

To test this yourself, do the following.

Set your camera to record RAW only.

Set your camera to VIVID, then edit VIVID and ramp the contrast and saturation ALL the way to the top.

Take a photo of something nice and colourful.

Open the file in Capture NX, and then open the file in any other program of your choice. You will notice a world of difference...

Obviously the key is to use your experience and judgment to develop the in camera settings to your own taste. I have a few different presets now, from STUDIO to LANDSCAPE for example. I started from a blank canvas with each, and generally tweaked the settings to get me close to what I felt I might have ended up doing on the computer. Saves a hell of a lot of time.

Gary.

Photoshop Elements has many, many more features than NX - and most of them you will never use! I personally use both programmes. I use NX for the simple stuff - cropping, adjusting levels etc and very minor 'touching up'. I use Photoshop Elements when I want to do a lot more processing with an image - such as changing the background or cloning out a section (such as a stray item that makes the frame look messy). Best thing I can suggest is keep using NX for now and if you find you are limited and want / need more creative freedom with your images then try a trial version of Photoshop (you get test it free for 30 days). Hope that helps.
