I am looking for a 4k media player that will connect to my NAS (HP Microserver and play 4k (and 1080p) content.
A mate has recommended the Nvidia Shield.

Anyone.

Both my brother and dad have them and rave about how good they are. Both stream via plex on them but I dont know if they stream 4k footage

A friend of mine says yay for 4k playback on loose files just wondering about the tie up with plex.

Had a bit of a light bulb moment last night, realised I had an old Amazon Fire box in a drawer from a few years ago.
fired it up and set it up for my plex server and bamm really big improvement over the built in app for plex on the smart TV.

Havent had chance to try 4k content yet but on high bitrate full HD it was slick (2hour film with file sixe of 13gb)

One other thing I found out the other day is the wired Ethernet port on the Samsung smart TV is only 100mb and was clipping out running from PLEx which is annoying, I think because the Fire TV has 1gb Ethernet it is much brisker with the plex server.

I bought the Amazon fire box before the shield as it advertised 4K. Thing is, it didn’t work. Apparently it only worked in a certain format or only in the Amazon videos app (can’t remember exactly). Plex was not in 4K.

I took it back and bought the shield.

The FIRE HD will pay the 4k stuff from plex if it is on 4k. I don't use a streaming service I use the raw files.
The issue with using plex is it has to transcode files into whatever format your destination device supports.
the 4k stuff is in h265 and the fire HD does support that.

Its all a bit tricky and the shield gets over that because it has a meaty processor that is what the cost is.
I should have more time this eve to see if it will do the 4k stuff.
