One of the problems with personal number plates is the owner incorrectly spaces them quite often to make up a name. This is illegal and the car is not roadworthy as is not complyance with the law regarding number plates. By breaking that law the car SHOULD NOT be on the public highway.
Following on from that not only should the car not be on the road but should an accident occur, no matter who is to blame, any clever solicitor will make a point of this and the owner of such a plate will have to pay for any personal injury -car repair out of their own pocket. No insurance will pay out, and nowadays they look for any excuse to stop payment.
One can buy "Show Plates" from numerous sources, but that is exactly what they are "show plates" and can ONLY be put on a car on private property as in a car show, not to be used on the public highway.
Accident costs can be astronomical, I had a successful claim against another driver who argued (his plates were legal). Not only was the repair to my car £9000, but with 2 personal injury claims involving two private doctors and two sets of solicitors I estimate the total payout was more in the region of £80/90,000. I don't know many that would be able to pay out that kind of money without selling their property.
I strongly advise everyone has their plates to conform with the law and get them properly spaced and possibly the correct original name of the car company that first sold the car.

....not quite right.....
The law is different pre and post September 2001.
After that date, your reg must be a certain size and font, you must have the BSI mark and the name of the company who made the plate up on the plate.
Before that date, the law allows two different size fonts.
There is anther law for pre 1973 plates (which can be black and white).
Both of the number plates I have on my two pre-2001 motors are completly blank (other than for the reg itself of course). No BSI mark or name of where the plates came from. This has never claused a problem, including at MOT time.
