Hi,
Ok, my problem- I need to take a good shot of a person naked- how would I go about positioning them and the lighting?
I would like to capture and old 18th century style image in B&W!
I'm a painter too and would like to transform the style of the image on to canvas!

You will need to pay a lot of attention to the body of your willing victim err I mean subject. The body shape and stature will point you very much in the right direction for posing. If they have fuller or shorter legs for instance a cross of the ankles instantly take width off and puts length on.
Props are always useful too a strategically placed piece of material can be a wonder.
The other one I have employed is a very short depth of field. With a subject lying face down I focused on her eyes and let the shallow depth of field take care of the length of the body.

Above all though, get your model relaxed and it will flow a lot better. And have fun!

Thank you for all the suggestions, I will definitely use them.
I'm also a bit worried about- I don't have a studio and professional lighting; do you think it could affect my image.

Hi latie!

As a painter you already understand composition and lighting.

Are you saing you want to use the photo as a reference to paint in b+w? Cool idea.

Yes, I do want the image as a reference; however, this will be my first on nude and using the body! I'm more landscape with my paintings, though I'm portraiture with photography!

Latie, if you don't mind splashing out a fiver... this PHOTOLEARN tutorial has some great suggestions for alternative sources of light, such as tealights, painting with torches etc. Could be just what you're looking for.

Okay! Do you need a studio and lighting? Decide what you want your finished image to look like. Sketch it out. Arrange props, model, etc accordingly. As the photo is not going to be your final image you can improvise lighting with torches, standard lamps whatever you have until it looks right to you. Same rules apply in Nude as any other form of portraiture - accentuate what you want, disguise what you don't and when it looks right it is right.

I suppose I don't really need a studio, I am quite happy shooting with natural light, I've done it with many of my projects!
The thing is I won't know if they went wrong until I've develop them myself! I'm more film than digital but I could always use my partners before using film.
Thanks!

I know it is not nude but this is my photography and I'm hoping to capture something like this in nude.
That image was done outside but partly covered- if you understand what I mean, lol! :)
