Apologies if this has been listed before.

Jacobs has opened a shop next door but one to Jessops on Shandwick Place in Edinburgh. I'm sure it wasn't there when I got off the bus this morning.
 
And in Chichester, I went to Jessops (rubbish) then to SUssex Camera Centre for a tripod, top service and really good price, couldn't be helpful enough.

Jessops seem to be throwing away a really good opportunity, no wonder they are struggling financially.
 
In Newcastle, they're directly oposate each other. One side of the traffic lights is Jacobs and the other side is Jessops. Their windows look over to each other. Wonder how many times the manager has been putting a display in the window and scowlled at the other shop :lol:
 
On Deansgate in Manchester, for several years there was a Jessops store opposite Wildings. Jessops had the largest shop and was known as a "World Camera Centre" back then, however Wildings 'won' in the end because Jessops moved to another part of Manchester last year with a shop only a fraction of the size of its previous premises.

They were doing it out when I was there at the start of the month, said opening the 7th on the sign outside.

Same situation in Middlesbrough virtually, except it's RGB that are 2 or 3 doors down from Jessops.
 
On New Oxford St, London, Jacobs opened up opposite Jessops. I hardly ever venture near Jessops any more. Its usually the internet for me.

of all the times i've needed something, jessops have never had it. Went in the other day, on the canon side of things they had 1 body on display i think, 3-4 canon lenses and a couple of tamron ones. The place is pretty devoid of stock, looks like its on its last legs.....

Just to clarify Carl. Jessops had two shops for sometime. And the lease ran out on the Deansgate premises, yes they decided not to renew with current financial problems although come on wildings have nowt

That part of London is absolutely crammed with camera shops only a short distance away as well - Kingsley Photographic (Tottenham Court Road), Aperture (Museum St), London Camera Exchange (Strand) - not to mention all the other electrical shops on TCR. Competition is fierce. The Jessops on New Oxford St has recently had a refurbishment, but the only thing I can really see is that they now have a black front rather than a blue one!

And flanked either side on the same street by two studios.

That is true. Jessops took over the former Tecno store in St. Peter's Square, although briefly, as well as having the Deansgate branch. I bought a lot of my camera gear at Jessops when it used to be in St. Mary's Gate (before the 1996 bomb) and when it moved to Deansgate, it was well stocked with cameras/lenses and also darkroom accessories and Ilford products, which I also purchased. What I also liked about this branch was that there were some knowledgeable members of staff working here.

As you say, Wildings were no comparison. The one I have here in Northwich where I live now doesn't appear to have much either apart from digital compacts. There's also a Jessops store just around the corner, and this is only a tiny shop.

So true, I went to get a tripod with my MIL as it was to be a birthday present and she doesn't like ordering off the internet. They didn't have a single Manfrotto in stock!
 
Saw that Jacobs today from the bus. I dont generally go along Shandwick Place very often cos of the roadworks but I may venture along and have a nose. Any idea what they are like for price/service etc? Bet Jessops are NOT happy :)
 
A number of years ago, LCE opened a store next door to a small local camera seller (two branches) in Lincoln. When the manageress of the local shop told me that she wasn't going to compete on price, I never walked in the shop again. It is now a betting shop.

The internet and ebay have opened out the market to anyone looking to buy electronic equipment and made the high street a horrible place to trade photographic goods. I don't envy them, but at the end of the day, as consumers, we all want value for money and back up. The high street often gives the back up, and a small premium is paid for it, if you want to "take the risk", the internet will save 15%.

We all have a choice!
 
It cn only be good for us........ the consumer.
