I must say that I haven't noticed the site slowing down, disappearing yes, ;) but no slowing down.

It seems that the site is being navigated in different ways by people. I go to the front page which shows the most recent posts. Then I search for any posts that I've contributed to or started.

With the 'subscribe to thread' option, is there a button which (when search is working) shows me those threads, or do I get emails saying that there has been a post in a subscribed thread? I haven't used that feature because I didn't want my email inbox receiving loads of messages.

You can subscribe to threads without email notification. Then, when you click on User CP, it will list subscribed threads where there are unread posts.

That's possible by using the bookmark option. Unfortunately while it will relieve some pressure. We'd need the other 25,000 people to do it too :p

We're also investigating server upgrade options as we speak. In all honesty we are stumped as to how performance has degraded so quickly in such a short space of time.
Marcel - if the usage of the 'Search' function has not increased proportionally in that same time, then it is safe to say it isn't this that is causing the performance hit.

OK, I don't have as many members or posts on my forum as on here, but the search function DOESN'T cause any hit on my server/forum.

I'd challenge the hosting admins to find the issue and I'd wager it isn't 'search'.

It's not *just* the search, it's the cumulation of many things that normally play nice together, the searching being the big fat bumbering idiot that knocks all the skittles over, which was why we had to temporarily disable it.
I'm going to look at re-enabling it with maybe some changes later today

POTN use a very similar template to TP, they seem to have a lot more traffic (new posts disappear much quicker from the first page) and their new posts/search functions don't seem to cause problems.

the issue is that "latest posts" is a "search". there is no need for this

latest posts could be a list held as a cache, or in memory on the server, or a list held on a small optimised database of its own, or in a table in the main database of its own. Knocking one post off the list and adding another one back on, has to be less server intensive than searching the database every time

Its a shame all of this.I do not get to sit at a mac and spend dedicated time to a forum. I am normally editing customers photos and dart in and out of forums as light relief. The "new Posts" search is definately needed as far as I am concerned

Just add my name to the list saying that I'm really missing the new post search. Really hope something can be sorted soon.

It will be back on very very soon.

Richard, blame Jelsoft / IP for that ;)

Yes. New server :)

Right, the search facility has been re-enabled.

PLEASE do not hammer the New Posts function repeatedly. The host support is on hand should anything go wrong.

However, I'm off out to get drunk at a Rock Band party tonight, so take care with it :)
The new server isn't here yet, so we're trusting that everyone just takes a bit of care. Post as much as you like, but searching and especially the New Posts....just be a little careful...thanks :)

For anyone missing the search function you can search like this as a temp measure....

  • Goto Google and click advanced search
  • Enter www.talkphotography.co.uk into the "website to search" field at the bottom
  • Enter your search criterea above and hey presto...

er.. Ok how do you find your posts ... tried putting TwentySixDays and limiting to www.talkphotography.co.uk and google returned nothing

 Thanks for trying - must be me still didn't get any results ... glad to search search is back

its a Titanium, with Sat nav, ipod dock and heated front windscreen.

Cool nice one Marcel
I for one am glad that its back

Its back on and breaks the forum, so its off again - we're moving to a dedicated server so it will be back on in a couple of days, so you nice folk will have to use the forums the way i do, and have a look at the areas you like, read this and that, generally browse.

The bit I miss the most is being able to look at my previous posts.

I can live with that :clap:

You can still see subscribed threads ....

The problem with Matty's comments are that some of us don't have the time to look at all the the places we like as this can be quite a few. I generally look at new posts because I like to see if there is something interesting to view. This could include the motorsport section (for an example) of which I do not normally frequent but do when I spot a headline worth opening.

Bring back new posts or lose viewers - which would you prefer?

:bang:

Sadly Tom, you seem to not get it.

Search on = forums broke, NO viewers
Search off = forums working as best as we can for the time being

so its a case of adapt or come back in a couple of days. Its really not THAT hard to use the forums without a search function...Ive managed very well on all the forums I use and have done for 10 years.

How come bigger forums I frequent don't have the same problem?

Not bitching Matty, just saying.

Wow I'm amazed that a site this resource intensive worked at all if it wasn't already on a dedicated - I love 'new posts' but it obviously has to wait now until the dedicated is up and running.
Just no point in having the site up and down like Weston donkeys just to have it for a few days until the dedicated is online ... the obvious and correct decision IMO.

To who? Not able to get on earlier tonight and wanting my forum fix decided to try POTN. Its not a patch on TP with or without the search function. I know there are others, most of which I have tried, but TP is the only forum I read regularly now because it is head and shoulders above the rest
