I'm slowly getting more and more used to editing in Lightroom and getting results I'm happy with but it's a little haphazard. I guess I should really make a note of what I did to get the result I liked so I can repeat it for similar images in the future. Does anyone have suggestions/tips about ways to do this?

TIA

^ presets can help, though usually they aren't going to be much use unless subject and lighting are similar.
What is useful is bottom left copy (settings changed) and paste onto next one from same set.
I quite enjoy it to be honest to the extent it is often a good idea to go back to shots taken months or years earlier and play about with some improved knowledge or technique.

As above, make a preset and use that as a starting point. I have a suite of presets I've made myself that I apply to most of my images. They'll usually need slight tweaking but it gets me close to the look I'm after.

This is definitely something I've done as I've learned more and it's very satisfying

Or use the Sync Settings feature in Develop. Select the one you like, then add the others you want to match to the selection and Sync.

I use sync quite often, and it's really helpful.

Presets are one step on from what you are asking for in your question - when you are in the Develop module in Lightroom, there is the "History" panel, which shows you exactly what you have done, and in what order. Of course, this is good information to use as a base for presets.

I never could figure out those expensive programs that will even wash the car for you. I found Picassa on the internet and it's got this deal that say's I'm feeling lucky. I hit it and live with what I get which is often better than what I had! I have a brother in Michigan that can do most anything with pohotoshop and a Nephew here in Oregon that is pretty darn good also! No idea how they figured it out!

That was your problem then - they aren't designed to wash the car, so it's no wonder you struggled. ;)
