How about this then... I have about £150 to play with. Ive been saving up to buy a 30D so my 400D would be demoted to the backup camera.

Now, my phone contract runs out this weekend, and the fella has been trying to convince me to get... an iPhone.
So, what do I do? Keep saving for the 30D? Or spend it on an iPhone handset? (No I cant get it free because I am not willing to pay a higher tariff before anyone says anything ;))

Tricky, the new iPhone does rock, but then new cameras are cool too...

So you're looking to buy it straight out?
As in, second hand/new on ebay?

Or are you looking to get it as an upgrade?

If it were me, and I was doing the latter, I'd seriously recommend getting it on a higher tariff.

Usually it works out cheaper over the year.
You might think spending say £20 on a tariff and £100 on a phone will be cheaper in the long run, but it's not. Spending £35 on a tariff and getting a free phone etc.

But yeah, it's not really a decision any of us can make.

Which do you need more, a new phone or a new camera?
Which would you benefit from more, a new phone or a new camera?
Which do you want more, a new phone or a new camera?

I'd pass on the iPhone and keep looking at the 30D. Yeah it's a great bit of kit but I think the new body would be a greater benefit. Of course I don't use a mobile that much, a couple of quid a month on calls maybe so perhaps my pov is different. I do have an iPod Touch and it's great for holidays, etc but I'm under no illusion, it's a boys toy.

Erm, nope.

£100 + 12 * £20 = £340
12 * £35 = £420

Ever considered a role in politics, chancellor maybe?

The cheapest tariff I can go on without scrimping on texts and minutes is £35 per month, which is what I am on now. I have to buy the handset for £100 for that.

As they say, which are you going to get more use from? I love my iPhone but then I use it almost every hour for all sorts of things. Its great to have email on the go and that I don't have to check because it tells me I have email. So I can respond to clients while out. Pocket internet too, gps, all sorts of great things. If you do need those features in a device, its not just a phone, then buy that. Its completely indespensable to me now. What features does the 30D have over the 400D that you need?

Pete, you're prob the worst person to ask about this

However, I needed a backup camera for the wedding I did, but I dont have any weddings in the very near future... the iPhone would be brilliant for emails etc on the go... hmmm...

Heres a point. You can buy the 30D anytime but once you're in a new phone contract thats it for 12-18 months. Maybe get the iPhone now? I guess you could keep your current phone and get the 30D instead then get the iPhone once the 30D has paid for itself.

I dont NEED a new camera, but the phone I have at the moment is starting to bug me. It doesnt have all the features I want, and its becoming more and more apparent, I will soon need emails on the go. That and my iPod is dead :D

Have I just answered my own question? :D

My contract is up about now too and I've been looking at the iphone as an interesting combo of toy/phone/ipod/mobile web. In the end I decided it wasn't for me and I'd rather have something else.

So, if it was me, I'd much rather have the new camera. Then again, if I had a girlfriend that wanted to get an iphone I suppose I could have had the best of both worlds. :D

There ya go :) New phone, wait a bit and then get the 30D.

Haha, I am prob getting it more for Darren than myself :D

Eeek! iPhone ahoy :D

Haha the point I was trying to make was that you should check out the costs beforehand, rather than going on what appears to be the cheapest!

I should perhaps have given a solid example, rather than a random number :p

I'll have you know I am a splitting image of Boris Johnson, so I'm halfway there :p

£35 tariff * 18 months + £100 handset = £730.00
£45 tariff * 18 months free handset = £810.00

Jesus, writing it down is scary :/

Give that you're tariffing for two now, those extra minutes and texts for £5 per month extra it will actually cost you, might come in handy.

Plus you get a free bolt on thingy going up to that higher tariff don't you?

Ill see what I get from both tariffs. If I get much more on the £45, Ill go with that, but it sounds like the £35 will suit me fine. Its unlimited data anyways, but Ill also get 600 minutes and 200 texts if memory serves :)

You do get quite a bit more. Apart from not paying out £100 for the phone, you get 1200 mins, 500 texts and a choice of things like unlimited land line calls, or unlimited minutes to O2 numbers.

All of which pales into insignificance compared to the joy of having people think you're pleasuring a small gerbil every time you use it in public. ;)

It all depends if you will use the features on the phone.
I always get the latest and greatest phone then after a week just end up using it as a phone.
However, as a newbie to DSLR photography and finding it all to addictive, I would be biased and say camera upgrade :D

Well wouldn't buying the camera depend on whether you'll use the features on that too? :p

Have you noticed that any thread about spending money on kit gets us all going! Its lovely spending others dosh!

If you really are torn between the two (genuinely!), then get the thing that you use most often.
Good luck:)

I already have both devices in question so makes no odds to me :p

My vote goes to the 30D....I think I mentioned it back in January too :p

Get a different, cheaper phone, and buy the 30D. At the end of the day, a phone's a phone, no matter how many different functions it has on it, you still answer phone calls with it.

Sort of the extra added functions that seperate it from other phones and make it worth buying though. Its not just a phone.

I'm on the Iphone £35 tarrif, and it's 600 minutes & 500 texts, but I hardly use text.. The free email and web are the killer, plus free WiFi with O2 or The Cloud, that's useful too (well it is in London).

Personally I find the phone really useful, and it's used time & time again every day - best business gadget I've ever had. But I can understand the dilema, wanting a camera upgrade as well....

Why can't they just make phones that are just phones? I want my

back

I'm all for functions and I like the iphone as a toy and a bit of kit...But to say it offers much more than other phones is not at all true.

I have an obsolete Ericsson 880i, it quite happily copes with...

Phone calls
texts
3G internet
Multiple email accounts
A camera
An MP3 player
A video player
Video calls

Unlike the iphone, it has no...

Wireless connection
GPS

however, unlike the iphone, it DOES handle
MMS
Video capture
Full Bluetooth file transfer
Acting as a 3G modem for my laptop

Oh... and it's a quarter the size of an iphone and the battery lasts twice as long.

Despite the fact that my current phone has far more real world functionality than the apple, the gadget lust was strong and I did get very close to getting one..... just because I wanted to.

In the end, I decided to wait for the ericsson C905. :D

Well that would be the phone, I always have my phone with me, I dont always have my camera with me :)

im serious i love mine it has mp3 player, and a decentish camera and email

As does the iPhone with regards to the MP3 player and email. I know the camera is rubbish on the iPhone, but thats not something that bothers me. My G600 has a 5MP camera, means nothing to me anymore, its bloody crap at taking pics.

no matter how many different functions it has on it, you still answer phone calls with it.

But the same can be said about a camera, all you do is take pictures with it ;) The iPhone will let me check my emails on the move, which is becoming more and more important to me, and yes, I am aware other phones do this too, but not (as Ive heard) as good as this phone.

Thats actually better than I was expecting, I text more than I call so that sounds perfect for me

i want a new iphone but have 5 months left on my contract lol.

I went from a k800i and I do feel that the iPhone has enough features that seperate it. Input method is far superior for emails and web access. The data plan is essentially unlimited compared to the normal o2 web bolt on which is 200mb. Browsing on the iPhone is actually possible compared to on the k800i. Basically the k800i to me was just a phone. I'd make calls and occasionally text. I could use it for email but it wasn't easy to respond on such a silly keyboard. Never liked using it as an mp3 player. The iPhone I do like using as an mp3 player, sending emails and with all the new apps its brilliant. I've got Twinkle for location based Twittering. Airme for uploading gps tagged images to Flickr tagged with the current weather conditions for funsies. I've got a whole bunch of great applications for it and its not even been 2 months yet.

I went into the Exeter Apple store and had a play with the iphone. I was seriously impressed with it. But still have another 6 months contract on my k810i. Gives me time to save for one I suppose.

i have an O2 XDA 2 (i think that's the model).

i can't remember the contract details, but i think it costs me 35 or 45 a month with unlimited browsing, email push, copilot sat nav, windows mobile etc. and more stuff than i'll ever use. i like it and it seems a bit more robust than the i-phones. maybe worth a look if you're in the market.
