Where I came from pretty much everyone used eating irons, didn't stand on the seat to have a s*** either.

Exactly this. It's not the people of this country that's letting it down - it's the education system and the way that different parts of the country are run by the wholly inefficient local councils instead of central government. Our education system was once the envy of the world, but it's now well over a hundred years out of date.

Rather than me starting a rant on this subject, take twenty minutes with a cuppa and have a listen to what this chap has to say. He's missing quite a bit and drifts off on occasion, but IMO he's researched what he says well and it will probably be an eye-opener for a lot of you.

Be sure to follow it to the end when he talks about the Finnish system compared with the rest of the word:

Central Government policy (both Tory and Labour) has turned our schools into exam factories where the schools position in a league table is more important than delivering an all round education & preparing students for adult life. The academies & free schools programmes have removed many schools from Local Authority control.......
