Hi,
I posted a while back asking for help chosing a camera. I ended up buying a Nikon40x and the lens which came with it, 18mm - 55mm or something along those lines.

Anyway I've been having fun but also some problems with it. I partly bought it so my mum could take photos of me jumping my horses as my old camera had a pretty long delay on it.

When, practising, I took some pictures of my friend's jumping in the sun, they came out lovely..

I went to a show at the weekend and even with the flash the pictures indoors were a little blurry..I figured it was just because it was rather dark, but it did occur to me that my friends Cannon EOD 400 could take lovely photos in a darker arena than this one.

But then today, my mum took some photos of me jumping my horse. It was quite cloudly, but not particarily dark, but ALL of them came out really blurry. The settings were all on auto as I'm not very experienced with cameras, and most of the photos were taken with the click-click-click sort of format..
They all came out like this

Here was one which she didn't take in the click click click way

It didn't want a flash until later, when it came out like this.

So no improvement? Anyway..am figuring I didn't get this camera recomended to me for this purpose out of spite by random strangers, and am equally sure that the reviews I read about it weren't lying so we must be doing something wrong.

I'd be grateful for any help

It looks like you need a faster shutter speed than you have been using. If you have the camera set to Auto, it will adjust the shutter speed to get the correct exposure for the light available, but will not detect that you are shooting a moving object. Does the camera have a pre-set sports mode for you to use?

The shutter speed is fairly slow on these, also it looks like they were not 'panned' so a blurry subject is almost inevitable.
A faster shutter and some panning could help.

Ooh yeah it does have a sports mode :bang:

Erm what does "panning" mean though?

I didn't put it on sports mode for the other pictures mind. Thanks

Also, to get a faster shutter speed..I can't seem to find an option for it, is it just the camera or the lens or what?

As much as I hate referring to manuals, you might want to read the manual to the camera, especially parts about shutter speed priority mode and manual mode.

I suggest exploring the M (manual) mode, where you set the ISO, shutter speed and aperture yourself.
Some links to assist with that:

I hope this helps a little.

Hi Jo

You may Want to up the ISO on the camera e.g 400 and set the camera to AV. Then set it to the lowest possible number by scrolling through them, e.g 5.6.

This should get you the fastest shutter speed in darker conditions, or just use sports mode for now.

You need to set the camera up with Shutter priority selected and then set the shutter speed to about 1/250th or faster if the light allows. The camera will then use this shutter speed and set the aperture accordingly.

You may need to set a faster ISO as well particularly if the light's poor. And don't forget to pan with the subject

Just looked at the EXIF information on one of the pictures you mother took. The Shutter speed was 1/50 at f4.8 with an ISO of 200. You'll probably need to go to ISO 800-1000 to get that 1/250 shutter speed on days like this

Thanks everyone..

Mark just explained more to me on the phone sooo hopefully its slowly sinking down into my skull. I shall try to experiement tomorrow hopefully someone will be jumping in the school.

At least I've worked out how to change the shutter speed ect...I think..

Lol thanks!
