in the next couple weeks im going to be investing in a canon eos 400d.

because this is my first dslr camera im not sure what to go for. do i jus go for basic (jus camera and kit lens) or a package with extra lens

i was thinking of purchasing the one from argos. you get the canon eos 400d and EF-S18-55mmf/3.5-5.6(non USM) lens plus you get an extra lens EF 55-200f/4.5-5.6 USM II Lens. also you get the battery grip which ive been told you normally have to buy separtely. (link to site: http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Produ...2|cat_9555976|Digital+SLR+cameras|9555995.htm )

it would be nice to have more then one lens so that ive got plenty to experiment with. i know you can get some good deals on the net but in all honesty ive rather purchase one in a shop. i had a quick nip in currys the other day and from what i could see they dont have any package ( i would have asked but they were too busy:bang::lol:)

any help on what kit i should start with would be much appreciated!!

thanks ;)

If you look at camera price buster thay have the 400d with 18-55 for £379.

Add the other lens from the lens section and the grip from accessories and I think you will make a saving.

Oh shouldm have said.

Before you buy go to a shop and hold cameras to see what you feel comfortable with.

This includes Nikon, Sony, pentax and Olympus as well as Canon.

Be careful if your thinking of buying from argos, they have a policy where you can take something back within 14 days but this does'ent cover cameras, on choosing lenses, you could always just buy the body and then get something like a 17-70mm sigma lens about £220 and a sigma 70-300mm APO lens for about £130, of course it depends on your budget and if you can afford canon glass go for it, of course if you want a really serious camera go for a Nikon, waits for the bullets to fly :D

ive jus found out theres a good camera shop thats not far from me so think il nip to them and have a good look.

what lens is best for landscapes/sunsets/wildlife ?? these are the main things im gonna be using it for.

That Argos offer does not include the grip, they are showing that as an extra for £99

I have the Canon 10-22mm for Landsacpes and love it.
There is also the Sigma 10-20mm but I have not used that so personally cant comment, though I know loads of people on here have it and rate it very highly

after seeing how much cheaper it is for the basic camera and kit lens i think thats deffo the way to go (would give me extra to spend on lens suitable for what i want)

I'd recommend that you get just the body then get the 18-55mm IS (imaged staibilised) lens (camerabox £100). This is a better lens than the non IS version, then later you can add the 55-250mm IS lens which has excellent reviews and retails around £180. A local camera shop may be able to offer some price reduction buying them together. I wished i'd just bought body only with my 400d as I'm now replacing the kit lens and could have saved myself £50!

if it helps I have one for sale

here

thanks for all the replys guys :)

mmcp42, thanks for letting us know of yours for sale but think id rather purchase from shop as ive got somewhere to go to if anything goes wrong ;)

im gonna nip to camera shop when i get chance and see what offer they can do before i deceide. along with camera, id ideally like a lens that i can use for wildlife (birds mainly) ill update when i find out :D

Check out the stores return policy as some are not as good as others. If anything is wrong in the warrenty period, Argos are very good at replacing the item. We had a small ftalscreen TV and pixels started going after 10 months - they just swopped it out in store, no questions.

well camera shop was a huge dissapointment! i couldnt see any 400d's so i asked the lady and she said 'oh we only have 450's now' :suspect: i asked her if they could get one to which her reply was 'the 450 has over taken the 400 so no' is she having a laugh?! they call themselfs a camera shop

off to currys again to see what offer they can do but looking likely that it will have to be off net

the 450d is the 400ds replacement. and with the release of the 1000d, i think the 400d will be(if it hasnt already) discontinued. i would have thought currys probably still have some in a store somewhere, they can bring it over for you.make sure you check there webpage before you go, click the camera and select collect at store, will check if they have any in stock, the internet may be cheaper as well.
lenswise, the kit lens is a good starting place to learn your camera and what you want to shoot, it isnt going to capture pics of a bird in flight but will do portraits etc quite happily. i would only get the kit lens and use that till you decide it is too short or two long for most then invest in the better glass.

when i went into local currys the other day i know they had couple 400ds. the store price was cheaper then the websites but will check if thats the best offer they got.

from what ive been reading/told theres loads of lenses for the eos 400d so if its discontinued theres still loads of upgrades for me ?? also it wont become more difficult should anything go wrong to get fixed ??

Why not buy second-hand with a guarantee? There's loads of retailers out there (Camtech for example offer a 1-year guarantee on all 2nd hand cameras) There's a thread around somewhere with a list... I appreciate what you're saying about things going wrong, but you will get SOOO much more for your money going second hand...

If you're going to buy new, what's your budget? A new 450D with the IS kit lens is only £70 more than the 400D with non-IS lens.

Just noticed - buying the 400D kit, plus the 55-200mm lens based on camerapricebuster prices, is £100 cheaper than Argos...

Hi Smudge

Most Canon lenses will fit most Canon cameras. The EF lenses fit all canon digital cameras. The EF-S lenses fit the 300/350/400/450D series and the 10/20/30/40D series

It is always worth getting the best lenses you can afford as they should last you a lifetime, camera should last a long time but if you really get into photography you may find you want bigger/better/lastest versions as time goes by and you learn more about it. The 400D is a great choice - I have one :-)

ive deceided for time being im happy to settle with just a kit lens.

i noticed there wasnt a huge difference in price between the 400 and 450 but whats the difference besides the 450 being the latest model/more mp's/better kit lens ?? is it really worth me paying the extra ?

Be careful if your thinking of buying from argos, they have a policy where you can take something back within 14 days but this does'ent cover cameras, on choosing lenses, you could always just buy the body and then get something like a 17-70mm sigma lens about £220 and a sigma 70-300mm APO lens for about £130, of course it depends on your budget and if you can afford canon glass go for it, of course if you want a really serious camera go for a Nikon, waits for the bullets to fly :D

You say that, but i think i'm right with saying that the consumer rights about electrical goods means that the buyer can return any item within a year of its purchase for any reasons deemed sensible.

been to currys today and they only had the one 400d (display model) left priced at £394. judging by the fingerprints on it its been picked up and fiddled with a fair few times. the most they were willing to do is a camera bag and memory card thrown in for £15 (usually £35 as a starter kit when purchased with camera) that was the best they were offering. i wasnt happy paying that so left it

im stuck in two minds now whether to hold out and spend extra on getting 450. how long is the current cash back offer on for (the new 450 offer) as it would make it £450 roughly which isnt a great deal more then the 400d.

choices lol

Be patient! With the iminent launch of the 1000d this will either drive prices of the 450d down, or launch some superduper packages. The cashback offer usually last for 3 months, and as it was only launched last week you've still got some time to decide.
If I were you, i'd wait for the 1000d launch to see what happens!
You won't be waiting for long!!

is the 1000d due out pretty soon ? i keep getting told the same thing in shops, been round all of town today and both currys had one left (both display models) few others are sold out and not restocking. the only place left for me to try is argos who's price is now down to £399

im now a proud owner of a 400d :woot: after alot of phoning around and being told their sold out/not restocking, i managed to find a currys with one (brand new in box not ex-display) had to travel bit further to get it but was worth the trip. (also got lowepro bag and 2gb card thrown in)

now all i got to do is learn all the controls

already thinking of next lens as the kit one isnt going to be much good for when i wanna move onto more bird/wildlife pics. as im new to the whole dslr im not yet up together on what lenses are best for certain subjects. any reccomendations for a light lens with good zoom would be much appreciated! (ill only have around £230-50 max for next lens)

Thanks for all the help guys, its been much appreciated!!

Nice one mate. I'm still learning the controls, and i've had mine about 4 months now.

As for the lens, wait for the moment, and find out what the lens you have can't do, that you'd want it to do.

I'm guessing that another memory card will be next, it was my first purchase after the camera, i got the 2gb, and shooting in raw made the card fill up too fast :/.

hoping to nip out this afternoon to get some snaps at local lake, hopefully it will stay fine.

next lens wont be till atleast october (birthday time = money!! :woot::lol:)

one lens ive read thats okay for wildlife is the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f4-5.6 IS. doesnt seem to badly priced
