Yes
I have been a stern Canon fan for some time now and always sided with them in the Canon / Nikon debate but I am getting pretty miffed with them right now.

My 7d is not what you would consider an old camera and it is well looked after and not abused as far as workload goes but recently the on camera flash has stopped working properly, the battery grip shutter release has packed in and today I put in my freshly charged battery only for the camera to give me a "cannot communicate with battery" warning.

How many more things can go wrong? especially on a supposedly semi pro kit.

Switch to Nikon, I'm sure it will never let you down

Quite a lot. It sounds as though you have an Err 30 or Err 40 en route.

Get your camera to a service centre whilst it's still within warranty.

with regards to the battery grip shutter release could it just be a dirty contact between grip and camera? Can you reset the camera back to the original settings? but it does sound as if there is a camera problem. As a Nikon owner we do have to help out the unfortunate Canon owners when we can.

I've not had anything of this sort with 6 canon bodies so far, right from the cheap 400D.

I'd suggest to get is serviced asap and then enjoy hassle free photography. If you fell like getting Nikon, try 1-series first - I doubt you'll want to move anywhere after that.

Just sounds like a bad camera. I have owned many Canon cameras/camcorders for over 10 years (from consumer to top end pro models) and have never had a fault with any of them, nothing at all...

Phah.... new 1Dmk111 stopped writing to cf/sd cards after 1000 or so shots, exchanged to a 5Dmk11 and the whole mirror assembly fell out on 600 odd shots, changed to nikon d700/D3's and 60,000 shots later still going strong

My mates 1d3 has just given up after about 2.5 million clicks on it, not bad if you ask me.

personally i think if your going to have problems it doesnt matter what you have, your either lucky or not! ive never had a problem with any of my canon bodies (owned 3) and cant fault them atal!

Is your battery grip a canon or 3rd party that maybe the answer as for the flash what do you mean its not working properly in what way, have you been playing with custom settings

D7k had its fair share of issues, the K-5 has plenty of problems too , I owned both, neitehr seems to suffer from any of the common problems. If you like your camera when it works just make sure you get it serviced :)

Grip is a Canon one, as is the faulty battery and the flash will not pop up, well maybe once in every 5 times you call for it (had a similar prob with my 400d)

As others have said, give Canon @ Elstree a ring and get it back to them as soon as ...

Hope you get it sorted out

My supposedly tough as old nails d300s wouldnt switch off after a month! Fixed by Nikon no problem, and has been fine since, as hase all my othe Nikon stuff.

It's pot luck cameras are really complex these days and you will get some problems regardless of brand.

Have a look at the link I posted, its most likely your flash problem is down to the micro switch which is a very easy fix.

I have had Nikon and Canon cameras and both are top quality. Currently I have a 7D and touch wood everything has been fine too date. Don't pay any attention to the Nikon owners who knock Canon they are hardly objective in their comments. I suspect if someone who had a Nikon made a similar post on here then there would be the same knocking comments from Canon owners.

Both are expensive and complicated pieces of equipment no matter how good the manufacturers quality control there is bound to be the occasional fault.

In the last 24 years I've had 4 Canon SLR's and 4 Canon DSLR's and many Canon compacts and lenses and not one has ever given me a problem. Would I have had the same good fortune with Nikon? Yeah, probably.
