I have made up my mind, I am never having a curry again. The missus talked me into getting a curry for tea, even though she knows it just does not agree with me. I always have problems eating greasy foods, it always repeats on me. I get terrible indigestion, and suffer from reflux after I have eaten an Indian. I think it may be a combination of the spices, and clarified butter/Ghee that they use. Anyway I ate the Curry at 5PM Friday evening, went to bed at 11PM, but had to get up soon after. I kept burping and getting that burning sensation, and I knew if I fell asleep I would wake up spluttering. I have done that many times, and it's very scary.

So now I am sitting up and posting this, 3.35am and I still feel full and queasy

LOL me too which is why I am awake right now, thing is I see it as a 'was worth it' situation as it was a kickass lamb bhuna. trouble is I went to the med cab to find out we are out of gaviscon :(

I have tried a Rennie, but no good. Still wide awake and not been to bed yet, going to try and get my head down now. Nearly 6am , by the time I get to bed it will be time to get up ! Well hope you manage to get to bed  I'm feeling knackered and I am now off to bed, going to give it another go. Not worth saying goodnight, as it's already morning lol

See the doc and ask for a H Pylori test.......I had similar years ago and this was the problem.. ...a weeks antibiotics and hey pesto back on the curries.....

I am allergic to Garlic, maybe you are too?

Its in so many things these days even things you wouldn't expect.
Check the ingredients on some foods that upset you and see if there is a link.

I had a wonderful Madras from a new restaurant near us...I had to try it out before we have one for the family tonight :)

My experiences vary wildy...At one restaurant I can have those effects, yet at another I'm absolutely fine...This one was particularly hot and absolutely fine....Greasy is a first sign of a not so good curry in my opinion....

I think the main point is YOU know it doesn't agree with you. Can't blame the missus :-)

Sounds like you are getting gastric reflux. Your doc can do something about it with medication. You can do something about by not eating foods that give you problems and by raising the head of your bed a few inches/ sleep propped up.

This is where homemade curries reign supreme, at least you know what's in them (they don't all have to be made using ghee). It can also e quicker than waiting for a takeaway.

Get a curry cookbook the Hairy Bikers one is rather good

Normally I do all the cooking, and I don't have a problem. I don't use salt or lard etc, try to keep it as healthy as possible. Just the missus loves an Indian, but I pay for it, both ways lol

A little more healthy eating, from now on I think. Been on the sofa trying to sleep propped up, without much luck!

Not been asleep at all, been watching films and listening to music, felt to iffy to nod off.

As Fabs says, learn to make your own, a curry doesn't have to be an oily greasy bowl of cheap ingredients. It can be a reasonably healthy meal if done right.

I have made my own version of a curry, not what you would call a proper Indian Curry. But I have simply made it with tomatoes onions mushrooms, lean Chicken and a small touch of Curry paste and a little Curry powder. With a little garlic but no salt, it comes out OK. But the missus prefers the Takeaways over mine :(

But my speciality is Chinese Cooking

Agree with Fabs, I never touched curries for 30 odd years then got persuaded to try making the Hairy Bikers recipe myself. I loved it with no after effects and its hot and spicy. Mince and tatties which I love used to give me really bad reflux so I stopped eating it. I eventually discovered it was a ingredient in the gravy mix that caused the problem. Again Hairy Bikers to the rescue, their recipe for their mince pies I use and the gravy has no gravy mix added, I leave out the pastry but use the mince with my mashed tatties and tastes superb.

Will have to get my wok back out, I make a lovely fried rice :p

Why don't you cook yourself and substitute all the fat with olive oil, use lean meat and good quality vegetables and the right amount of spice for your liking? As much as I like Indian food, I would not live on unhealthy restaurant or worse the awful 'ready-made' microwave stuff.

Me too :D

And you know what? I prefer a curry from the local Chinese guys,
than the local Indian guys ........ / cat / pigeons :D

.

Takes a bit of getting used to. Other thing is to go to bed on an empty stomach. Nothing else to eat after dinner.

I do tend to use Olive Oil, I never use Salt and tend to try and cook light. Just the missus prefers Indian takeaways as she says they are full of flavour. But as we know, it's the fat that gives it the flavour!

Chinese Curry is just as bad, it's full of used oil flour and has lots of Monosodium Glutamate, gives me a terrible head ache. Pretty much a wimp I am, with strong greasy foods !

I tend to have a light early supper by about 8.30PM, early I know. Maybe something light like a piece of toast, with a light spread something like Olivio, and a glass of water. Can't eat after 9PM, as it tends to hamper sleep..

I quite often make currys at home, and although they don't quite taste like the authentic ones (which is probably down to the ghee), they are pretty good, and I prefer my own biryanis to the takeaway ones.
Here is a link to a site where a British guy goes into local restaurants and films the chefs as they prepare dishes. He then makes his own based on the information which he has collated.

I always use sunflower or rapeseed oil in my currys, because olive oil imparts a light unique flavour which I don't like.
I also find the things which make a big difference to a homemade curry are: fennel seeds fried with the onions and garlic at the start, using plenty of crushed garlic and ginger paste, methi (in vegetable dishes) and freshly chopped coriander sprinkled in the dish at the end of cooking.

I've never eaten Indian food in all my 72 years, and have no intention of doing so, even the smell of the stuff is off-putting.

My village store is run by Indians and over the last couple of months or so they've been making curries to sell, they are the best I've tasted and to go into the shop when they've been cooking them is yummy, sometimes you get to try a little too as a taster :D

Got a multitude of Restaurants and Cafes in our lane, my back bedroom overlooks a Turkish Restaurant and either side of that there is a Romanian eating place and a big Thai place. While to the front there is a Srilankan place, the smells that come from this place really get your mouth watering. But I know if I have most of these foods, I know I will pay for it with reflux and indigestion :(

The only place I can eat on the lane, is the Italian the food in there is superb.

oh!

Just finished a Thai Red Curry made by my own fair hands, oh it was good, even my guests said so!

The secret is to have a bleedin good drink afterwards, so ta ta for tonight!

I succumbed & used a jar tonight, but with extra friend onion, plus cardamom, fresh coriander, some banana, almonds and peppers it tasted pretty close to restaurant standard. :)

Do you have onion friends then? :D

Yup, they form layers around me.

A visit to the Doc is called for.

I used to suffer after most food. Doc sent me to hospital for check up, there are 2 way for this (a) camera (onscopy ) to look for problems (b) barium ? a liquid drink that they watch going down and tip you all ways to help it down. This is the treatment I had, and they found that there is a valve and it was't closing properly.

Treatment is 1 tablet each evening and I can eat anything.
