Do you think, Fireman , Postman , Milkman, has a certain ring to the titles? Just heard what someone on TV, is supposed to have over heard while travelling. He heard a fellow passenger on a plane say, when he heard the female Captain start talking. Passenger said " Oh my god, a woman flying the plane, we are all going to die" Not sure if it was said jokingly, or it was said seriously.

No need for this sort of silly attitude, but we all tend to do it. Me and the missus started talking about it. We are all for women doing a man's job, or what is perceived as a man's job, and why not? She slipped up and said to me, " go down, and see if the Postman has been".

We did agree however, a dinner gentleman, does not have the same ring to it, as does a dinner lady :).

I agree with the 'dinner gentleman' that's why we no longer have fireman and we have firefighters, a post lady doesn't sound too bad and neither does a milk lady however for some strange reason...that makes me grin [emoji12]

I think the crack about the female airline captain is just a very old 'joke' that was never funny the first time round. When I hear one I just think 'oh good, another woman flying a plane.' Many years ago when I was doing my pilot training I'd flown into a regional airport and a guy came over as we were getting out and started congratulating the two guys in my aircraft (instructor and my partner) on the flying, landing etc etc. Then I got out of the left hand seat. His face was a picture.
But I automatically say 'postman'. Hmmmm

Postie is a good name. Then it can be man or woman.
Milkie sounds plain creepy though!

I agree, postie good, Milkie weird!
I can't remember though, the last time I saw a milkman

Much prefer milk maid :).

Too many people are far too sensitive. There was a billboard ad that caused 'offence' as it said "are you fat and ugly, come to our gym and just be ugly" - pretty funny in my book.

Trouble is everyone is offended these days by innocent remarks or jokes.

We stopped getting milk deliveries about eight or nine years ago, the milkman ( for it was a he ) retired. Took a bloomin age to get the milk of a morning. I had been out one morning, and on my way back, I saw our milkman driving his float. It was about 5am in the morning, and I passed him on a dual carriageway. I was doing the speed limit, and he was probably doing about 5MPH. He delivered our milk, about an hour or two later. Could not stop on the dual carriageway, otherwise I would have got it off him there and then.

Just call them Oi!

They are just words that denote a profession not the persons sex. The fact the word has man at the end has no relevance. After all aren't we all human?
Not sure we ALL are. I've come across some on here that I wouldn't class as being part of mankind :P

Human, how about Man made, even if it was created by a woman ;).

The use of a gender specific term to describe a whole population isn't restricted to Man. Herds of Cows are often groups of bullocks (male) rather than actually being cows (female) and how many people keep a Dog which is actually a bitch?

My Dog is a bitch ...

Being raised on a farm, that's not one I'm familiar with. Herds of bullocks were called...herds of bullocks. :D

Me either, it was either Bullocks, heifers, cows (once calved no not carved calved :D ) or generic cattle

To me as well but to the general public, they're all cows!

But applied to humans, it becomes a derogatory term. Although, calling someone a silly moo, seems to be acceptable :).

Pretty sure it's the PC brigade wanting to get offended on others behalves.. because a manhole cover is no longer. It's a non gender specific personal maintenance access aperture.

I was looking at tents this morning, most list sizes as 2 / 3 / 4 person tent, there are still a few that say 2 / 3 / 4 Man tent.

That brings up a whole new dimension. Don't you think tents are sizeist. Ok I'm not skinny, but I'm also not a big bloke. Yet whenever I've looked at tents I always seem to find that to get a two persons tent you have to size up to a 4 person one, etc. Basically double it if you want to be able to use it and put your backpack in it as well etc. For our family of 4 we ended up with a 8 person quick erect model, everything else was just way too small.

Just the way modern tents have gone. When I was camping in the 70s, my tent that was sold as a four man tent, only just managed to cram four medium sized people in. We were squashed into our sleeping bags. Nowadays people sleep on camp beds, inside their tents. Modern tents are more generous, when it comes to sizing.

How come you can get man sized portions, child size portions, but no woman sized portions?

Do you normally have problems with erections??? ;)

Yes, find it quite hard doing it by myself. Especially an 8 person sized one. Hence the Khyam Quick Erect models are very useful.

Seriously though, women go through the Menopause. Who on earth, gave it that name? Must have been a man :).

After a few dozen years of the menstrual cycle! :runaway:

To be non gender specific, shouldn't it be BIcycle?
