Hi all

Is there anyone on here that was a part of the Northern Soul moment?

As it turns out.. google tells me that "What is Northern Soul?" is searched for many times. So I thought id do a quick blog post on my site. Im looking to go to some NS events pretty soon (end of the month) to back up the post with more images.

If your interested in reading the post you can find it here. Please feel free to point out my mistake and inaccuracies ha ha !.... I'm sure there will be some! (secretly my fingers are crossed for none ha ha)

I look forward to your thoughts

Cheers

Northern Soul has been discussed on this very forum earlier this year

As it turns out... Talk Photography search tells me this and wrote about it HERE

Keep the faith! ;)

THanks Keith - yeah i see the posts now. thanks for that.

Really was was looking to see if anyone could see any inconsistencies in my post - but never the less. thanks for the additional info :)

I spent many a all nighter at wigan casino ,no alcohol allowed when I used to go ,I only stopped when I joined the army in 1978 ,we still have reunions in my home town in Blackburn were I gang of us used to go ...

Right, at some of the Skinhead do's I go to they do play some Northern Soul. I've never really seen it as a Skinhead thing albeit plenty Skinheads are into it. As you can tell I'm not a great fan of the actual music and I can take it in small doses. I do however really enjoy watching people dancing to it. That in itself is an art form and I have great respect and admiration for those, both male and female who can do it properly. For a brief period at the end of the original Skinhead era up here, about 73/74 I did have baggies and platforms:D:D

Sorry Jason , I was part of the Northern soul scene and I have some fond memories I can still recall the clothes I used to wear loved every minute ,we used to get the train there and muck in for a taxi back ,as said you couldn't get beer when I was there just soft drinks and the dancing was constant all night ...

I still listen to northern soul when in the mood.. too old to do the moves.. went to wigan casino twice and wasnt impressed with the venue.. you couldnt do a full walk around the balcony haha... Had I known at the time how famous it was all going to be then I would have gone more,.. you never know eh.. You could stil get northern soul in smaller clubs...... years later went to the all nighters on morecambe pier

The venue was very small and to be honest it wasn't really sociable ,you just danced until you were tired ,and then watched the other dancers ,the nightclub at Morcambe was called porkys if I remember correctly

I started listening to it in the early 70's & got hooked. I still listen nowadays & VERY occasionally go to a NS night.

Funnily enough I bought a pair of Rude Boy ox-blood tassle loafers a couple of months ago. They are almost identical to the ones I had 40+ yrs ago.

I'm too old to dance much these days (apart from basic side step) & usually need a gallon of ale to `encourage` me, but used to do the single spin & back drops.

Although most of the bigger venues have disappeared now, the NS movement is probably just as big as it was (maybe more so?)
There are NS nights every w/end all over the country & not exclusively in the north.

A good venue was Blackpool Mecca. They used to run free buses there.

Chipppy Nicholls is a top dancer ,a real wiganer, spent time near Morecambe in Heysham ,I think that's how you spell it, also I know glen singleton who also was a champion soul dancer he was from the Manchester area

When we went to Preston (I was a reserve at Blackburn under Jim smith just before Howard Kendal took over) and I remember a boat we used to go on and its really annoying me what it was called but it was a floating nightclub
