Northern Lights forcast

Hmmm, clear down here in Aldershot, do I pack the cam and wander up to my fave highpoint?????

If all the forecasts are to be believed neither of us are going to see anything =/

Stupid Question  But... i have "tried" to read the links on the times and maps on when it is going to be covering Europe ... but after looking 10million times im afraid to admit that my blondeness is really showing through and i havent a clue on how to read them lol :bonk: I very much doubt i will get to see anything but i was wondering if anyone knows if it will beable to be seen from Devon, i looked at one map and from "what i can gather" it looks like its going to come right over the UK and down over to France etc..but i could be wrong lol. So can anyone tell me if i might be able to see it :) Thanks in advance

Hmm, got uniform to iron anyway, will pop headout after, if it is clear I may take a quick drive, its only 5 min away

I'm standing on the southern coast overlooking Lough Neagh. Starting to clear up so hopefully I'll see something soon.

Up at Slemish and the only thing thats happening is that I am scared %$*@less, its clear enough but bloody windy!! Another 30mins and im for bed!

Nothing here so far in the Castlereagh Hills

Think I'll pass up and go to bed - battery isn't charged anyway.

Nothing in blackpool either. On goes the radio for 30 mins, then back home for bed.

From reading the charts, at the moment it should only be visible from anywhere north of Aberdeen and only on the horizon, so us southerners don't stand a chance.

Could get better later on though but probably not until about 3am.

You carnt get more north than us (mainland) :)
But nothing :shake: just cloads, rain and a wet camera :'(
Maybe tomorrow night

Only a predicted index of 2 tomorrow (Thursday night) so no chance, not even for our Scottish friends. Only the Faroe Islands and north from there.

Doesn't look like it's coming, I guess a trip to Iceland is in order one day...

Couldnt see anything from here :(

still took a couple of pics though lol:

I've just had a wander outside, more out of hope than expectation. As I thought, nothing - too far south! But never mind, at least I know I haven't missed anything. I think the best way of seeing it is to save for a trip to the Artic Circle.

I did wander out and have a look... not expecting to see anything, and I was right...

The milky way was stunning though and I did see a Perseid flash past...

I'm off to Iceland in just over a week, will there be anything left to hope for? Only taken me 35 years or so to get there, couldn't afford it before (don't suppose i can now but I don't care!)

Do you need someone to carry your bags? I can put some bags on my chariot :D

Good (for me). I had an early night, and would've been devastated if something had have happened :D

If only we had known that.......:D

I went in July one year and there was only about two hours of darkness.

Not that it helps you much, hopefully your in luck and you get to see it. It's an amazing country, especially for photography.

Damn missed it :/ and ****** weather too. Would love to have seen it here in norfolk.

Just read the link to the register, now after an eventful and disapointing night yesterday (Read as clear skys till around midnight, got ready to go top of a local hill then a power cut hit killing street lights, yipee i thought and then clouds rolled in!) Is it worth the trek out tonight do you think as at the moment it is clear skys again (Ossett, West Yorkshire)?

looking at the links on page one I dont think it is worth the effort. Seems activity is very low at the moment :(

Hey, apparently there has been some clear sightings of the Northern Lights tonight according to a radio station, but they never mentioned which area of the UK it was seen in, just thought i'd inform incase anyone was wanting to keep their eyes peeled :)

Just been out in the field up the hill with the dogs.

Clear as a bell - a zillion stars.

There's a very slight greeny tinge on the Northern horizon.

What's the very bright object looking South East ?

To see it as you get further south the Kp levels (not sure what that means) need to get up to 10+, it's considered a storm at +5, and whilst the Kp levels did hit 6 on Wednesday, they never got above 5 yesterday, based on the twitter feed from Aurora_Alerts, and I'm not sure, but I don't think you're likely to see them unless your right up the top of Scotland.

That'll be Jupiter most likely.

Good luck with the Iceland trip - I went back in February, booked onto a Northern lights tour which was cancelled owing to cloud cover, rebooked the second night, same problem. Hope you're more fortunate than that.

I have, however, seen the lights flying from San Francisco to Heathrow a few years back - quite spectacular somewhere near Greenland. This was before I had really gotten into photography, so I picked up my little compact, and promptly blinded the entire plane, on which most were sleeping, with the flash - the flight attendant told me off, and all I got was a seriously overexposed mess.

Starwalk on the iPhone uses the compass and accelerometers to change the view as you turn, it's a great idea... shame the iPod touch doesn't do that... Still, I've learnt my way around fairly well now.

That'll probably be the Sun. Even down here on the south coast the northern horizon is still fairly light all night. Try pointing a camera at it and do 10s, ISO 800, wide-open. The camera will show it as being blue, but your eyes are more sensitive to green light, so that explains the blue-green hue.

just been out down south fambridge to get a glimse of this evenings sunset and spoke to a trekker, he said this thursday evening apparently its viewable from where we was??

just a heads up thats all, if its clear skies im going.. :D
