Northern Lights forcast

I'd love to see it, but I don't think it's gonna get to this end of the country... Good luck though Richard...

I presume you guys have seen this?

http://www.dcs.lancs.ac.uk/iono/aurorawatch/

It can and does happen here in the UK, check out the gallery

A lot of these were taken in Lancaster right near me. One day when they give the warning I will get my bum out of bed and get somewhere dark and hopefully I might see them:shrug:

Yeah and spaceweather.com, but I think I'm too far south. If it's clear I'll look anyway.

Dave Stone reports seeing them from the control tower at Gatwick before.

IIRC???

cool. I hope we get clear skies.

Are there any suggestions of times anywhere?

EDIT: Apart from Night-time, of course ;)

It would be when the sky is at its darkest..... the nights are so short at this time of year.

As I understand it the displays could be going on above our heads right now, but it would be too light to see them.

Many years ago I was in Greenland in early august, when it was just starting to get dark at night again. There were some researchers there who could detect the displays with their instruments, even during the day, I think, but they were still invisible to the human eye.

they suggest going somewhere away (as much as possibe) from street lights and other light pollution to increase you chance of seeing them.

So up a hill in the middle of he night it is and hope it's not cloudy. The reckon winter is better for seeing them as the night is longer and generally darker

Anyone know how long it will last? Tonight looks very cloudy round here, but Wednesday night is supposed to be uber clear.

I'd be happy just to see the sun!

yeah its to do with the coronal mass ejection from the sun when the sun throws a tantrum and releases this energy and when it hits the earths atmosphere it can disrupt satellites, internet, phones etc. according to scientists it will affect the GPS and phone signals and it wont even be that bad, it will just have some dodgy moments.

it can be seen in the UK and even in the south of Rome which isn't normal because Rome don't see much of these aurora displays.

Now, to decide to bunk off work and travel up to scotland to see if they do come that far down.....

I thought it said Wednesday night which to me means in about 15 hours time from now ! It is Wednesday DAY now isn't it ?

The Map shows that the edge of the Aurora might get down as far as the midlands...

http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/pmap/pmapN.html

The northern US is better suited to seeing them.

If you're on twitter... follow http://BANNED/Aurora_Alerts

Of course, even if the aurora was active over here last night, the clouds would have obscured it completely, and it's looking like it's gonna go the same way today... for most of the country... although there is the possibility of a clear area of sky moving in from the Irish sea.

Well, I'm in Blackpool, and the report for midnight tonight, which is when Wikipedia says one of the streams of particles should hit, is partly cloudy...Fingers crossed!

I'm at the football in Wigan tonight, so might stop off in the hills for an hour or two if the weather is looking promising :) I'd absolutely love to see them, even just a glimpse would make me happy :D

I would do anything to see them, always been a dream of mine.

I might pop out tonight to try and see them if the skies are clear.

What sort of settings should be used to try and capture images of this phenomena?

Same as any other type of late night landscape I suppose - highish ISO, long shutter speed. Not too long however, or you'll get star trails. I imagine a big aperture lens would help :)

Yep. Seen on a nightshift, Although not as impressive as they must have been further north. In theory they are visible from any point on the globe.

I would imagine if you went up Belmont/Rivington Pike where there is no light polution you should get a good view there, cloud cover permitting

Looking out the window all I see is clouds but the forecast are clear skies up here in Aberdeen tonight so may just have to go out and see what I see. Left camera at home though which is 250 miles south! :( How good is this iphone 4 camera then???

iPhone 4 camera is a lot better than the old one but still not great! Its still worse than my old ixus 70.

Julian, all I can see is a red cross, work filters out a lot of 'social' or 'Personal Storage' sites including blogs and photobucket so can't see what you are posting in the image :(

Jim, It's better than no camera at all too but time will tell if I see anything at all. Must try and remember too :$

Paul it is just a NO IPHONE logo, only cos I want 1 :-)

There was something on the TV this lunchtime about it being visible tonight.

They didn't seem to sure how far South it might be visible and as ever a lot depends on cloud cover.
