Northern Lights *Alert* (Threads Merged)

Clear skies here but being in Worthing I don't think there is much chance of seeing anything here.

Space Weather is not looking too hopeful.

It is possible to get very good displays in the south of the UK. A guy I knew (Mike Harlow) was once giving us a slide-show of the aurora pics he'd taken from Alaska the previous year. Then he switched location - to his back garden in Ipswitch. They got back from Alaska a within days there was a great display visible all over the country.

If you are lucky enough then I'd recommend a wide-angle lens (20mm or less on an APS-C camera) and point it north on a tripod (it really won't be worth trying without one). Set it wide-open and use a shutter speed of around 20 seconds. Take a test shot and adjust to try to minimise light pollution.

Even if we do get the aurora strong enough to show dahn sarf, the light pollution over much of the country will make it invisible.

That'll be *current* activity. They use magnetometers to detect disturbances if memory serves.

There has been a major CME, and it's heading for Earth. There will be aurorae

Just had an email alert from Aurora Watch re intense activity.

Unfortunately, there's also an almost full moon so it'll have to be a bright display. I've just been outside for a look and there's nothing visible as yet.

Where you heading for?

I've not made my mind up yet. I'm near Gatwick, so my northern view is across London which isn't good.

Think I'll drive west, Woking way and just see if I can find a good spot. I really should planned this

Looks fairly clear in the sky.

You never know :)

Saw them from the Hurtigruten Ferry in Norway last year. Amazing.

This is probably the most sane shot. It's quite hard doing long-exposure photography from a moving ship !

Never mind the northern lights, i'd be happy to just see the sun for a change :shake:

We are Oop Norf Terri

Still, would be nice to get a break to see it. Only ever had a brief glimpse in Canada many moons ago.

Mick.

Newton aycliffe .. i keep looking out side but still not good

I have merged the two threads on the same subject :) hopefully it still flows.

sky seems to be clearing so going to keep a look out

been looking out and i doubt we will see anything.. keeps changing

Just having a coffee then I'm heading out.

If all else fails, I'll head to the motorway for some boring light trails.

There is intense auroral activity in the northern sky. Unfortunately, there's also an incredibly bright moon as well which doesn't bode well for people further south :(

Here's an idea of what's happening...

Got all excited as the BBC website has a "our pictures of the northern lights" gallery.

Alas it is filled with "i took this on a cruise in iceland" and " in 2009 whilst in the artic circle"................none from today!

Rubbish.

Fog, cloud and an orange hum from London. None of these things I like!

Ah well, next time.

I think the comments about the moon being too bright are right
I tried to get some shots, but the light pollution over reading is a joke - especially since I am just south of reading and shooting towards the town :(
I came back with the inevitable moon pics :D lol

Round 2 tonight, meant to be viewable from the South again weather depending.

We are forecast snow overnight here :( and 100% cloud coverage for days! so not fair.

Grey, grey and grey is the report for Surrey.

I'm not even going to bother tonight.

Cold and wet last night.

Grey here in Western Scotland. And the forecast is for biblical amounts of rain later tonight.

Couldn't see anything tonight in Colchester on my drive back from the sticks... :(

We have very little artificial light pollution here - rural area about 20 miles from Galloway Forest Park (Dark Sky) - but we do have a lot of cloud, rain and mist!

I just heard on the news that another flare has been emitted, the biggest ever seen and is expected to interfere with radio signals and as a result yep the northern lights will be about a little longer for us not up north

Anyone interested in the Aurora can sign up here and get email alerts.
