North Norfolk Coast [Snettisham to Cromer]

Morning all,

I have my eye on the high tide wader roost at Snettisham later in the year (looks like there are two consecutive days in September and October) so I thought I'd have a bit of a recon mission down that area on Monday. Given I'm shooting at Ipswich Town on Tuesday evening I thought I'd book myself a campsite down that way and have a bimble along the coast (while many times visitor to Hunstanton where the mother in law has a van I've never actually explored the area) to see what other spots are worth a look from a landscape photography perspective.

I've created (as I normally do) a layered Google Map to highlight a few bits and bobs .. of course anything else hidden away and worth a check is always appreciated

As always, with a first trip to a relatively new location, I'm not focused on taking too many 'keepers' rather on in the field planning .... Will probably do a quick write up to accompany the map with useful bits such as hotspots, parking and of course where to get a decent coffee

I go to Norfolk a bit, in fact I'm going tomorrow; there is a thread here that may be useful to you https://www.talkphotography.co.uk/threads/north-norfolk.594704/ Snettisham has plenty of parking and all free, it's a good walk to the beach from there so allow a bit of time to get into position. I'm not sure that there will be a lot of waders arialising as it's a bit early in the year but there will be some activity. September October, as you say, is the better time and then the Pink feet arrive as well and that can be worth seeing. If you are a bird watcher I would recommend a telescope as the mudflats are vast and the birds small. There is a hide a little way up the beach that overlooks the lagoons and with a suitable lens you may get roosting waders waiting to return to the mudflats. When the waders are flying keep your eyes open for Peregrines as they pick them off, I had it happen right in front of me on one of my trips.

PS: Royden Common on the Lynn Road is a great place for photographing Heather, that's where I'm going tomorrow.

Nigel,

I don't know how much you know about photographing the waders at snettisham, but your visit needs to co-incide with the highest of high tides for at to be really worthwhile. If you google it you'll find a list of dates and times for best results. Sometimes you have to leave the car-park before dawn to reach the hide(s) at the right time, or arrive back after dark.

also two of the best hides were washed away in a storm surge in December 2013 and I'm not sure if they've been replaced yet.
