Noooooooooooooo! Stop messing with the forums......

stop arguing guys, we had a little change around to try and make things a bit more logical and a bit easier for the casual browser.

Just a thought , but anyone who wants to always go to a specific forum and has trouble finding it , can always use the 'watched forums' feature to make a bespoke list of the boards they like and then click directly through it too them - I hadn't apprecited how handy that was until it was pointed out to me, so i just thought i'd share the love

Which is fine until there's changes, because all the watched forums I had have been deleted / missing now since the recent changes

only one forum has actually been deleted though - the others have just moved arround (which presumably broke the links - although oddly mine are still there) - so it won't be hard to go round and watch the ones that interest you - i don't supose those already changed will be changing again so you should be safe to make the effort

I agree with the not arguing but

I'm not a casual browser :(

Not a casual browser either, personally I hate the new layout - it's too confusing, just got used to the old layout with talk in one area and critique and sharing etc in another and you go and dump it all in one area. . . . Thankfully there are other forums that we use that go on the old 'if it aint broke don't fix it' mentality - strangely there member lists seem to grow more and more each time I look, strange huh [rolls eyes]

I will hang on for a bit longer to see if anything changes but I doubt it will, after all were just the 'users'

It should all be there with links redirected to the new places (except Talk Basics)

If something else has gone missing there's something weird going on.

That's actually a VERY good tip (y)

.

a bit like the 40k plus user list for TP really - as I said earlier this thread gives me a strong sense of deja vu , when marcy and co made the switch to xen foro there were a whole bunch of members who were allegedly vote with their feet if it didn't go back to how it was immediately.... most of them are still here, and if any did leave over it its fair to say the forum hasn't missed them.

in a few months time nearly everyone will be used to the new layout and if they happen to look back at this thread they'll wonder what the big deal was. - and on that note I'm done with this thread , as it isn't a big deal to me I shall stop wasting time discussing it, and go talk about photography instead.

You'd think they would have sorted out an unanswered posts link as a priority first...

(someones going to tell me they have now arent they)

LOL, I take it you missed the notifications, the threads, the tweets etc :D

If you can decipher which is the talk section out of the mess of course ;-)

I was one of those who cut right back on TP after the last upheaval and stayed because of a few friends - guess I will be one of the 'not missed' in a month or so, heyho!

to be honest comments like that just confuse me - honest question not a dig , is it really that hard to say "oh I'm interested in nature, i'll click on the nature forum" ? - and voila I have sub forums for talk nature, or if I prefer I can look at pictures of nature and give helpful critique. I'm really struggling to see what the big deal is apart from people being unsettled by any change in routine.

(and on that note I really am going)

And *this* is why I didn't allow the other thread to run.
The bitching and backbiting and snide insults in here are pathetic.
All borne out of a completely negative outlook, which is always how these threads have turned out historically....moanfests. This is why such threads now aren't allowed in what was the Forum Discussion. It breeds negativity and ill-feeling. Look at the animosity from just three pages of posts!

The forums are changing. We need that to happen. The old layout may have been easier for some but it was confusing for alot of people too. We're growing. With that come adaptations. We're evolving from one large community to a large site with many sub-communities and the forum changes need to reflect that. We can't keep trying to shoehorn one big group of people around the whole site.
This is about grouping of interests, forums, and making it easier for people to find what they're looking for. Not to make it easy to go somewhere where you've always gone.

As for "I can't find". Use the forum features. There are loads of inbuilt functions within the forum software. We'll help everyone use them and learn them. Just ask. Click things too! It's amazing what's clickable within this software, and what you can do with it.

For example, scrolling to page two of a forum to find a prefix?
Click this bit at the bottom of the forum instead.

As for the oh-so-sarcastic and clever insults about Out of Focus being at the top....comments like that make us just ignore anything else you have to say.

The only forum removed was Talk Basics. This is under discussion still about whether we should have kept it.
Everything else is under constant discussion within the mod team.
We're users too, so to say it's for "Change sake" is wrong. We've looked at this and decided to do this to take the forums forward.
The 365/12/52 forums were nice to have separately, but before they were amalgamated, most of them dated back over a year on the first page.
That's an incredibly slow moving forum. If it's so slow, then why does it need it's own area? Especially with other functions for finding topics and threads like above.
Because it's just easier? Why not have a forum for, say, what colour lens caps you prefer....Silly analogy I know, but a line has to be drawn.
We need each forum to be particularly busy enough to warrant it's own section.

{snip}
.DAVID.

And what is the need for you (and others in here) to post with such derision towards myself and the other mods and admins who give up our time freely every day to make this site what it is. We don't do it because we have to, you know.
We do it to provide somewhere for photographers to discuss and share their photography, so to say you're "Just the users" is incredibly insulting.

Yes, we take feedback all the time. We listen to those who are polite, constructive and *reasonable* in their opinions.
What may seem like a confusing layout to you, could be incredibly easy for newcomers. Ever thought of that?

With regards to the finer details, such as category titles, forum descriptions, orders etc...these are fluid all the time anyway. Even more so now, we're still tweaking the layout. We're incorporating new features to go with the new layout too.
This isn't the end. Have faith and try to see it from our point of view instead of foot stamping and saying "I don't like it, it's not where it usually is".
Try a different cereal for once, or put your knives, forks and spoons in a different order in the drawer. You never know...you might take to it if you give yourself a chance. Don't be so stubborn. Be positive. Embrace it.

Trying to use humour to hide insults doesn't really work very well, nor does patronising the poor o_O

OR the elderly.

It is getting a little hard to navigate on the mobile app to many groups and sub groups, I'll get used to it but it is definitely harder in the app which is a pain as I do most of my browsing here using it!

Still a great forum though and if the powers that be think this is the way forward then so be it!

Think it makes more sense for the welcome forum to be the first seen and I echo the views that putti oof near the top does nt necessarily give the right impression to new or existing members so please consider addressing this mods.

The other changes seem fair enough.....

I'm not bothered about groupings, orders or whatever, change is just something that happens but the thing I'm having a real problem is when I try and browse in landscape on my tablet.

Trying to prod the correct field is very much a hit and miss :(

inspired by Marcels click on things instruction , I've just discovered that 'spy' (on the far right of the Forum bar) gives a rolling teletype of every post made on the forum - a bit like the old football scores thing used to do on grandstand back in the day.

Could be interesting to keep open in the bottom of the screen to keep an eye on what's being said and done.

in retrospect maybe I should have put this ijn the "cool things thread" - mods please feel free to stick it wherever it gives you greatest pleasure

Click on the main headings - they open a separate page with the subheadings listed bigger HTH

So click on the 'general' or "Nature' of what ever section it is you want first, then the the areas within in are laid out as they used to be anyway.

That works :)

*But all the extra prods will wear my poor shutter finger out and I'll have to browse left handed

**If my wife catches me browsing left handed she'll suspect I've been on "other" websites ;)

See, that's the reason we did it... don't forget the videos of the wife when she works you out please :p

Flipping heck - I can't keep up with the changes

If the slight re-jigging of an Internet forum is the biggest problem in someone's life, I'd reckon their life must be pretty good. Might be best if we kept our moans for something which actually matters.

Judging by some of the crap threads that get posted in here that covers most topics :D

Err....

It's gone back to how it was o_O

no it hasn't, just shoved communities back down leaving welcome and TP up top.

Oh.... and for those that might miss Talk Basics, the 'Beginner' prefix has now been activated forum wide, so where ever you are in the forum you can use it to indicate that you might be asking something you think might be stupid. However, as always, regardless of whether its used or not and where the question is asked, it would be nice to think everyone could answer politely anyway ;)

OK
That looks better :)
It just takes a bit of getting used to. Kind of like getting a new camera.

Marcel must have ForumGAS...

Oh no. My new-found love, OOF/General Discussion has been moved. Now I'll have to spend time scrolling down almost half a page.
I may have to whinge about this outrage.

No problem.

All you have to do is click on the minus signs in the blue header bars for main forums, photography discussions and the business of photography and voila, no more tedious scrolling. ;)

.

I suspect that marcel has merged the photo feedback sections into the discussion sections to get more people to post pics and join in with critique which is really what a photo site should be about:)
Think the layout as it is now is about right please don't move it about again tho I will get really confused :D

If something else has gone missing there's something weird going on.

I sorted out a list of my most commonly used forums to be watched, ie talk photography, talk basics, then 2 from the speciality section (portraits and people & Landscape) and then talk equipment, lighting and studio and business if I remember right. Now, there's nothing in my list at all, tis all gone :-/

Don't do that old chap....it would make one look almost ungrateful

I kind of like the menu structure looking different everytime I come on at the minute....doing wonders for my eye-hand cooordination

Thanks for moving the OOF, Marcel.

Logic has prevailed!
