Hi guys.

Im new here and new to photography.

I have bought myself a 2nd hand kit. For £200, nice cheap starting package I think.

  • Camera - EOS 400D
  • Kit Lens - EFS 18-55mm
  • Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens
  • x2 Extreme III Sandisk memory cars (4GB and 2GB)
  • Canon RC-1 IR Remote control
  • Selection of Tiffen filters
  • Charger
  • Battery (replaced fairly recently as the original was losing its charge)
  • Box, Manuals and CDs
  • Lowepro Nova 1 bag in excellent condition (mark in photo is dust)
  • Camera lens and memory card pouches

This is going to be a fun couple of weeks. I have a new job which doesn't start for 2 weeks, so plenty of time to play for now! (Gotta love garden leave)

So is my starter kit I've bought decent, seems ok from what Ive read online.

I've not used canon stuff but a friend of mine does, looks like a great starting set up to me.

I hope you realise that if the bug bites you will spend a fortune. I made the mistake of buying an Olympus twin lens kit on ebay 2-3 years ago for £180.

I now have 3 Oly bodies, 6 lenses and a newly acquired Nikon body. Doh!

Hi Lee. Welcome to the forum from another newbie

For £200, Sound like a massive bargain to me.

My 2 cents worth

For just starting out, you can't go wrong with this package......though you'll probably want to add a tripod as soon as feasible.

No need for expensive equipment when starting out. Use what you have to get to grips with the basics such as exposure control, composition, achieiving sharp pictures etc.....(the list can go on and on)

The main thing is like you say....play around and learn what style of photograpy interests you before you invest in further equipment which suits your needs more specifically

Good luck and Enjoy

Perfectly adequate setup Lee and the best advice I can give is to read through the tutorial pages on here and then go out and shoot shoot shoot. Fill up those cards with all sorts of subjects then get them up on the screen and if your not happy with them ? Ask yourself why then read some more, then shoot some more then read some more (seeing a pattern here? lol)
Go through the Critique section on the forum and see where others may have gone wrong and follow there journey to improving there skills (Perhaps post some of your own on there)

The TP forums are a great resource if you're prepared to trawl through it. Best No. 1 bit of advice? Have fun, seriously. don't get too bogged down in the technicalities and fine details too quickly or you may get disheartened too soon and give up. Remember its a hobby its meant to be a pleasure.

Yeah. Once the camera arrives (hopefully Wednesday) I will go and take a few pics of my car. I have a nice white Subaru Impreza, which hopefully should be very photogenic!

In fact, here is a pic taken recently using my mobile phone. I'm hoping to get some great shots with a SLR.
