The rest of us,
How many of you have noticed that your favourite brand (or three)
Has remained static in price, or indeed fallen over the last few weeks?

But of course here is the rub (Sorry for the pun roll ya owners / pipe smokers :D)
The packets now contain N-N-N-Nineteen!

Of course if you follow this through to its "logical" conclusion,
how long before we are paying in excess of sick squid for one?
Its a damned conspiracy I tell ya! a damned conspiracy! :D

I guess its much like the stunt of selling fuel in litres,
for those that remember the "switch over"
circa £1:30/litre sounds much better than
Circa £5:90 / Gallon.

But that's just an example and I would never advocate smoking while filling up,
especially as the weather gets warmer and petrol gets more volatile :D

BTW any anti smokers that come in here to derail the thread with all the usual anti smoking crap type stuff,
will be pointed at and laughed at.
You can't say you weren't warned :p

I don't smoke. However, its like chocolate bars. They've got smaller. They say its for our health yet the price stays the same. Its all a con. But as I'm loosing weight the size of a choc bar doesn't matter to me anymore, cough cough (excuse the pun ;) )

Yep, mine actually dropped at Tesco last week, as did the number in the pack, although oddly they work out cheaper per cig too so its a genuine price drop... Can't see it lasting mind you.

Another question, just for smokers, hearing a lot of people with the usual summer cmplaints atm about getting bitten by midges, mozzies, especially when out on country walks. Now I know many years ago it was the done thing for gentlemen [of all classes] to smoke a pipe, particularly in Scotland, Norway, etc where they have a LOT of midges at this time of year, as the pipe smoke kept them away. Now, I am rarely bitten by any of these beasties.... is that the single health benefit of smoking I wonder? ;)

Same here, especially when I blow smoke in their little faces
and you hear them coughing :D

But of course its a "fact of nature" if not somewhat a little unnatural,
that bee keepers use smoke to move the colony, while nicking the honey :D

4.10/20 in Crete. And that's €4.10... The leap to £2.50/20 in a budget some years ago was the straw that broke this Camel's back (OK, this B&H's back!)

Never worked for me I used to get eaten alive when nipping out of the motorhome for quick ciggie. No longer smoke and saved a fortune in cigs & insect bite ointment :).

It's not a con, like all business costs of fags and chocolate increase. 2 options, increase price or decrease quantity. I have kept my basic print package the same price but gave reduced what is included about 3 times now.

£2/20, for an expensive brand like Camel (bliss!), in South Africa. Peter Stuyvesant were going for about £1.50/20 on special offer a few months ago. Of course, that's using a very weak rand price converted to sterling, and a bit misleading, but still.........

Midges don't bother me at all, mozzies - the SA ones - do, and they seem to be impervious to tobacco smoke. Booze works, in that you don't notice the bites at the time, but I gave that up years ago.

How about us ex smokers

I was one of those real weirdos back when the smoking ban came in I was managing a bar, an asthmatic and a non smoker and I was against the smoking ban :cuckoo:

That said stuff like this really does crack me up, the question is though which would you prefer, a packet reduction or a price increase?

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls may I introduce you to my new discovery of 2014 ... nasal snuff!

Research in the 1990s could find no adverse health effects from the stuff so ... NO TAX!! It's ridiculously cheap! And no restirctions on taking snuff indoors or even at restaurant tables!

You get a lovely little nicotine hit, you get a runny nose and a mucky hanky [has to be a dark coloured one too] and you get some really funny looks - but as Pipe Smoker of the Year, Eric Morecombe, used to say "they can't touch you for it!" (y)

Can't happen as it was made illegal to sell singles a few years ago

On the fuel side, there used to be uproar when fuel went up by 2p/gallon. With litres, if it goes up 5p no one bothers, but that's about 23p/gallon and a bloody rip off

As long as you play nice its ok :p

Was one? Past tense? :p

It doesn't make any difference does it in the scheme of things you are still paying the same/ more,
for every 20 packets you buy, with nineteen, in, that's another "extra" packet to buy.
TBH what p***ed me off was the fact that I never heard anything about it, it was just done.
Even the supermarket, when I asked for 20 (or multiples there of) never corrected me.

I didn't know that,
but I'm sure if it suits HMG or the manufactures, it'll change back.

I certainly remember the packet of 5 (as opposed to the packet of three from the barbers :D)
With the increasing expense, I'm surprised that there aren't any about.
That is to say, I've not seem them for a lot of years.

Absolutely!

I can remember my dad forcing that down me, or should that be up me?
many years ago, when I had a cold.

He claimed that it would "clear me out"
I'm not sure about that, TBH, it used to make me sneeze and cough though :D

smoking while filling up,
especially as the weather gets warmer and petrol gets more volatile :D

Now that would be an effective way to fight with both smoking and road congestion :)

Discovery of 2014? You are abit behind with that :D

It'd certainly add to the list of candidates for the Darwin awards if nothing else :D

I originally typed "MY" in capital letters ... of course it's a bit old, but its new to me.

BTW, on that other 17th century idea, Rich, I've taken your advice and I'll probably copy you wearing a wig :D

Lets be honest honest you left that goal more open than the Brazilian goal keeper ;)
If that was an anology Woooooooshhhhhhhhhhhhhh
it went straight over my head :p

Funnily enough that happened to the Brazilian goalie too :p
Of course I should have also added "football" comments would be pointed and laughed at.
but I never expected for one minute that anyone would stoop that low.
Lessoned learned for future posts :p

You know I was born and tend to live in the gutter, you meet some fantastic people when you go that low :P a besides that silly game is over isn't it...I only know what happened because my dad turned it on and then fell asleep with the controller in hand :bang:

That's one way of disguising that terrible crack habit! :sneaky:

I remember those prices too !

I also remember when the "super king" brand was one of the cheaper ones.
Now they seem to be one of the most expensive. :(

Also do you remember when it was "King size" ala B&H and the like?
And normal No.6 et al?

How come they are mostly king-size, but "normal sized"
and the king-sized have become "Super kings" ?

I guess its the same a Mars bars, they used to be huge for a tanner.
Now the king-sized is the "proper" Mars bar, and they even split that in two.
So that's not as big as it was either.

Stuff this crap, I'm off to Narnia

I was actually shocked when someone asked me to buy them a packet on my way over to their house !!!
I always said I would quit before I went to roll ups, cant stand them so really glad I did before the prices rocketed.
But I do get annoyed with all this "it costs the health service a fortune" thing, you guys pay a fortune in tax, you are entitled
to be ill and get some back (y)

TBH I caught more colds and other bugs after I packed up then I did when I smoked, thankfully that seems to have
levelled out now, I just break things instead :);)

In answer to Yvonne, just stick close to me in a midge infested zone, buggers seem the pick on me so you'll be
perfectly safe (y)

Ok Chris you can point and laugh ......................I don't care :p

Our local shop - yes we have one LOL sell the L&B silver packs and the blue packs.

The blue packs are a £1 cheaper but have 19 in rather than 20 but it still works out cheaper.

Can you imagine sitting around in a pub or restaurant with a middle aged man snorting powder off the back of his hand? I would marry him just so I could divorce him on the strength of intolerable behaviour

I used to smoke SuperKings back in the 1980s, and that was because they were cheaper and a longer ciggy. I think they were about £1 or something, can't recall it was so long ago.
