Hi,

Just wondering as we'd like to get something for our daughter - but not a phone - I suppose would could get a cheap smartphone or tablet and remove the SIM, but it would then feel like a phone with bits turned off.

So have any of you good peeps heard of such a device?

Ta.

There used to be a Samsung Galaxy music player, don't know if it still exists. Reviews were not good compared to the iPod touch.

Okay thanks - to be honest I can see it either being a Nexus 5 or a phone with the SIM removed - but I thought it worth asking.

It doesn't help that the iPod Touch has been declining so little need to copy it either, plus phones are so cheap.

Galaxy 4.2 is very nice.

Can't you still call the emergency services with a phone with no sim in it?

Would the Kindle Fire HD6 be too big?

I'd not heard of the HD6, I'll have to take a look, it might be as she really wants a phone of her own she can play games on, but we don't want her to be running up bills (or to feel like something is missing for her device).

Not sure about 999 without a sim, I understand you can without credit, but wouldn't it need a sim to instruct the phone to use a specific carrier?

Ah, might be a bit big - but I doubt we'd have it by Christmas anyway - only just availble for pre-release in the US and Amazon have never exactly rushed to get things over here.

Why not get a Phone from Tesco and and get it capped to say £5 a month.

Any calls would just open the flood gates - she's only just turned 7 and we feel thats a little too soon especially as outside of school her friends tend to be a couple of years older.

What will your daughter use the device for. If just music then a nano is good, if she wants games then you have to look at I touch ipad mini kindle and a host of other makes

Thanks both of you - I just checked out the Galaxy Player and its back on android 2.1 - so many newer games won't play on it - plus at that money (even the 8GB at £70) its a bit pricey for what it is.

Music will be one part, but also playing games - we have (and still are) considering the ipod touch (not the mini as the prices are ridiculous) but are steering away from Apple as we don't really buy into their okay but pretty ethos and are primarilt android users and know where we stand with those - plus personally I hate the bloaded itunes platform - yugh...

Don't get the whole "bloated" iTunes thing.

I had a thought... if we were to just get a phone (this solving a few bits and bobs plus making it loads cheaper) - is there any reason I couldn't have a credit-less sim in it that we could call her if we needed - or do you think that might open her up too much to the world of phones and potential little sods with nothing better to do that hassle her?

You are her father. It's for you to decide, not us.

lol, I wasn't asking you to decide. I never would!

I was asking if there was any reason - I'm good but I can't think of everything :)

For instance there may be an app that you might know of that blocks all numbers except ones on the white list - I don;t know I've started looking but not found it yet.

Edit: I did find something that looks like it might work - expensive for an app at £4 but looks good - link
