Can I open a non-editable adjustment of a layer in PS Elements 10?
 
Not sure exactly what you mean but you can open an ajustment layer without making any ajustments, some people do that to get a layer mask.

True, but as Elements 9 and 10 have normal layer masks just like CS then that would not be the reason.:)
 
Thank you for your replies (Wayne you always lovely and help me, I am still learning elements but getting better lol). Sorry for not making myself clear, I am trying to open a template into Elements 9 (not 10 by the way) and on the layers panal where there can sometimes be a lock, there is a pen (looks like a pen) and if I hover over it it say non-editable ajustment. My instructions said I was suppose to have a smart layer but it does not show that. Maybe I just cant do this in elements.
 
The pen tool is usually connected to paths, have a look with the template open and see if theres a path showing in the paths palette.
Any chance you can post a screencap of wht your seeing, what sort of template/layer is it?
 
I am trying to open a e book cover template but I think I will have to find another template. Dont have the software for screencap. I couldn't find what you meant by a path palette but will have another look. Just thought I would try and learn if I am unsure about anything in PSE. Thank you.
 
if i reading this right,
what you need to do is when you open a pic, double click on pic in layers pallette,
you then get option box to name pic if you want, or just click ok to make pic unlock and editable
 
i thought smart layers were only in CS5 not elements. Are you following a tutorial?
 
Yes Leigh you are right. Its not available for Elements, I have found other template that open up layers now. thank you
