Hello all. Been looking at one of these.

Basically the missus has a Samsung ACE and it is shocking in every way you can imagine. So, thought about giving one of these a go. Android has seemingly become a little boring and whilst Nokia doesn't have the 54 billion apps available that no one ever uses anyway, it seems to have all the ones she would use.

Looking at a contract on 3 with all you can eat data for £28 a month.

What are these kinda phones like and does anyone have W8?

Much appreciated.
David.

Have a lumia 920 and love it....there aren't really any missing apps these days.

Much prefer it to android, don't really get on with my nexus 7 tbh.

I got mine in July replacing my awful Samsung galaxy y. Same £28 contract and have been very happy with it. The only niggle i have is that the default ring volume is very low, and if you forget to turn the volume up after switching on you often don't hear it ringing

Thats good to hear some owner experiences. What is the battery life like? I've read in reviews it should see the day through but they seemed less than enthusiastic about it. My S3 was great when I had it but it now needs 2 charges a day and hers did the same. Also, are they nippy to use? Hers lags alot!

She uses the camera alot and facebook, internet, texting and ringing etc so I'm not too worried about the app store being less full as she simply won't have any use for them.

Thanks again.

I usually get a couple of days after a full recharge, it is used for business and I get quite a few emails to reply to whilst I am out and about. I'm the same as you, dont really find the use for apps.
After six months use it is still quick and I do like the windows software. Much better than android in my opinion. The only time I had a battery issue was on a business trip when I decided to use the GPS. The battery went from full to zero in about 3 hours, so I have gone back to my Navman in the car ever since then.

Thats a good bit of info. The battery sounds like it should see her through the day then. :D

I am a bit bored of Android tbh, I've had it for a few years now and think it's time I moved. My contract isn't up for 6 months so if the missus gets on with the 925 ok I may go for a 1020 or what ever is out there then.

Yes, they seem to bring out a new version every couple of months. impossible to keep up

I love my Nokia 625 WinPhone! Like you, the WinApp store has plenty of apps that are of use to me. I get a few days per charge from mine, admittedly, with little use. I mainly use the interweb via WiFi rather than 3G but that's because I'm a cheapskate and on PAYG rather than contract! A bigger screen would be nice but the smaller one I plumped for was 1/2 the price of the latest, largest model (have I mentioned that I'm a cheapskate?!) and is plenty large enough for my eyes, even without my reading glasses on.

it's all the pennies i pick up! Best not forget the three DSLRs as well. Only two FF though. After last year, I am very aware that shrouds have no pockets and that he who lives with the most and best toys isn't losing!

The 1020 camera is staggeringly good. The 920/925 are great too. WP8 is a great OS. My work phone has been one since launch although my home one is android (got to keep up with the competition!). Really fast os compared to android, much easier on the hardware. I'd recommend going Nokia just because the lumias trend to get preferential treatment from MS.

Thanks for the input mate. I'm really drawn to the 1020 for me. I've gotten bored on Android of late, need a change. Pretty sure the 925 will suit the missus well and the OS sounds like it is quicker than Android which is super power hungry.

I'm a total android geek, but I also work for Microsoft. I'm a geek forest and foremost which is why I use all tech, but I've got to say that the rate of development and the investment in Wp8 is staggering. The camera on the 1020 is the tits. The pro can app (also works on the 9xx series) gives great manual control. They shoot the Children in Need video on a 1020 - obviously this was sponsored, but it gives you an idea of quality http://mynokiablog.com/2013/10/29/n...-nokia-lumia-1020-with-1020-and-925-in-video/

Plus they do a camera grip for it which adds an extra battery, a grip and a proper shutter button!

I've just found Android a little stale. I started with a HTC Desire and thought it was good but even on my S3 and Nexus 7 I can't say the experience is that much different. I used to LOVE getting a new phone so I could have a change but when they all run the same OS it becomes boring. I'm not a massive app user and probably use about 10 tops and some of them are once a blue moon or so. Is the 1020 the flagship model? What does the 15xx and 25xx series phones do?

I sawthe wedidng that was shot with the 1020 and it was pretty cool.

IIRC, Microsoft have quite a large stake in Nokia.

I can imagine that being true Nod. I have just watched a review on the 1520... 6" screen????

Also watched a review on the 925 and it looked good too. I think she will love iy and the much better camera. She makes cakes and the pics she takes of them for her fb page are p*ss poor tbh. I keep trying to get her to use my camera but she won't.

Microsoft have bought Nokia's handset division, think it's all been shareholder approved now.

925 camera is same if not better than the 920, and it's still better than every other camera around bar the 1020, particularly the OIS.

Purchased! :D that should certainly be better than her Samsung ACE. The staff in there are so helpful and being an existing customer the setup was done in about 10 minutes! Went for the black version which looks super sleek! :) and if she hates it I will have it and she can have my S3.

Make sure you install the free Nokia Pro Cam app, it's really good and gives proper manual controls, its really good.

Not available for the 625. Never mind, I only use the camera for snaps so don't need full control. Chers for the heads up anyway.

No, it only works on the ones with the more advanced cameras like the 920, 925, 1020 etc
