Noisy AF on Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 *2nd update*

Whilst out with the above lens today, it has suddenly started making an extremely unhealthy noise. The regular AF isn't a problem - although my other half thinks it IS noisier than usual, I can't be certain if that's the case or not to be honest. However, as soon as the lens starts "hunting" at all, it makes a sort of whining, grating noise.

Any ideas?
 
is the AF on the canon version of this lens self driven?
 
Yes, my opinion was also that it needed looking at on the quick. :( I'm hoping that Cameraworld in town do repairs - I can get it to them tomorrow if they do. I'm desperate to get the thing back by our first speedway event of the year on 11th March as I was relying on using it for all my portrait stuff that day. :shrug:
 
sounds like u got sand or grit in it, my 50mm 1.8 made an awful noise when it slightly buckeled all i had to do tho is push it back in place and it was fine...

That was what it sounded like to me too - can't imagine how if so though. Oh well, if so it will hopefully be a fairly simple and not too pricey repair.
 
Thanks Allan - my fingers are tightly crossed. You're right about not wanting to be without it too - I have NO real alternative to this lens these days - my old 19-35mm Tamron is currently back on the camera with the Nifty in the bag for backup, but I'll be lost without the Sigma for too long. :razz:
 
Hi Witch, I can't remember if you use Nikon or McCanon. If it is Nikon you are more than welcome to borrow my 17-55mm f/2.8 if the repair cannot be done in time, you're not far from me so meeting up shouldn't be a problem.
 
Colin that's a lovely offer - but I'm a Canonite. Thank you ever so much anyway - Had our makes matched I may well have taken you up on that one!

Rang Cameraworld today and it turns out they don't do lens repairs so I shall have to give Sigma UK a call tomorrow to see what the drill is. :(
 
Well, I have just spoken with Sigma UK. Interesting conversation. Firstly, for anyone who isn't aware - be warned that you need to register for your extended warranty on the EX series lenses. Nothing I've seen anywhere makes this clear I have to say - and I'm guessing I may not be the only one not to know about it.

As soon as I explained to the chap on the phone about the problem he immediately said "Oh yes - it's making a griunding noise is it?" which rather suggests it's a problem that they know about, of course the plus point is that if they know about it, it will be easily fixable - hopefully! He said straight off to send it back to them and they will either repair the AF motor or more likely replace it, So the lens heads away in the post tomorrow. :'( Their turn around time is apparently "two - three weeks" so fingers crossed I might get it back in time for my deadline of the 11th March for our speedway press day. Current "Plan B" in case of not getting it back is going to be to shoot all my portrait stuff that day with the nifty I think - and do any zooming necessary with my feet. For the group stuff I'd have to fall back on my old Tamron 19-35mm which is no hardship - I love the lens anyway and it's sharp as a tack, in fact the only downside with having bought the 24-70mm has been that having passed the 19-35mm to my other half it's been mighty tough wrestling it off him! :lol:
 
Heard back from Sigma today - apparently the noise the lens is making is the "regular noise they all make". Unfortunately at the moment the chap in their service department can't explain why, in spite of almost constant use over the past twelve months, it's only just become that noisy! He tells me that they will lube up the motor inside and see if that helps.....I suspect they will actually just send it back as is, still making the noise, at which point I shall take it to cameraworld for their opinion, I think. :thumbsdown: Not terribly happy to be honest - it's basically unusable if it comes back to me just as bad - I certainly won't be able to use it for our speedway press day which is coming up, and for which I was relying on it. :bang:
 
well they've obviously done something as it sounds much better. I suspect I shall never find out what the problem really was, but frankly, as long as it's working, I don't care much!

Out of interest, did you check the serial numbers to see if they sent you yours back, or just chucked you another they had in stock?

Definately mine James. I'd have known even without checking the serial no. :)
 
Hi, I had one of these a couple of years ago, but I gave up using it as it was just too noisy. Image quality was great but the noise from the AF coupled with the mirror slap from my 20D was just too much! Now use either Sigma lenses with HSM, or Canon with USM.
 
The regular noise doesn't worry me - I'm used to it and anyway it's so fast to focus normally you hardly notice it. I suspect come next winter though it's going to get replaced with a Canon 24-105mm f4 L. The more I look at it, the more I think I want one!
